Shoebox gift donations up over 50 percent

‘Ocie’the Operation Christmas Child greeter, delivering shoeboxes.
The FPC Chancel Choir,
directed by Thelma Cagle
and accompanied by Donna
Garrison will present Can

cantata by Mark Hayes and
Pamela Martin on Sunday,
December 12 at 3 p.m. This
cantata interweaves Scrip

beloved carols sung by the
choir and joined by the audi

singing are organized around
the lighting of the candles of
the Advent wreath symboliz

Peace, Joy, Love, and of
Christ Himself.
The community is cor

in this event to witness rep

wreath. Come and listen as
children from the church and
community sing “Love came
down at Christmas.” Atten

reception to be held after the
cantata.
Shoebox gifts to hurting

hundreds packed online or
those taken to the processing
center. You, our partners in
the ministry of Operation
Christmas Child, are the
hands and feet of Jesus and
you walked the extra mile
this year. We can’t thank you
enough.

perhaps the only gift they’ll

Advent. Advent is the four
weeks prior to Christmas

means “coming” or “ar

when we wait, we look

we hope for the birth of
Christ. C. Welton Gaddy

this in their book Worship

The Serenity Prayer
“Godgrant me the serenity to
accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I
can, and the wisdom to know the
difference. ” -Reinhold Niebuhr
T he Serenity prayer is a
popular prayer that is
beloved by many. Its
simple wisdom is a template for
living a good and virtuous life. The
first element advises a serene
acceptance of all the things we
cannot change. We often wish we
could change people or
circumstances when a moments
thought would tell us this is
impossible. Fretting about the
weather or the past is even more
foolish. Many of the “problems” we
face are no more trouble than a
cloudy day and we should accept
them with serenity. The second
element requires action. The
courage to change the things we
can usually requires planning and
determined effort, especially when
the things we want to change are
significant. Changing a bad habit
or getting into a new routine
requires us to diligently follow a
certain plan, until the new habit
becomes second nature. One often
realizes with this second element
that the things we can change
usually pertain to our own selves,
that is, our habits, our actions, and
our ways of living and being in the
world. This realization is the
beginning of the wisdom
mentioned in the third element of
the Serenity prayer. The wisdom to
know the difference between what
we can change and what we
cannot almost always comes down
to the brute fact that we can
change ourselves (though even this
is difficult) and we can rarely if
ever change others.
