not a passive, twiddle-your-
thumbs, sleepily yawning
kind of waiting. The waiting
appropriate for the beginning
of the Christian year is an ac
tive, eyes-wide-open, alert,
standing-on-tiptoes kind of
waiting. The year-long pil
grimage of Christians’ wor
ship of God begins not with
the kind of fretful, fearful
waiting associated with
standing alone in a grave
yard, but with the kind of
hopeful anticipatory waiting
prompted by a visit to a nurs
ery. An active memory stirs
expectation.
Advent is a hopeful kind
of waiting. We understand
hope and waiting, right.
Christmas is filled with hope,
waiting, anticipating, and
looking forward too. We
hope all goes well as we
gather with family, we wait
on gifts to be delivered on
time, and we anticipate what
we might receive from fam
ily and friends. We experi
ence this every year in one
way or another. The empty
stable during Advent both in
side our church and outside
are meant to build anticipa
tion and hope as we wait on
the birth of Christ. Here at
JUMC inside and outside we
have a Joseph leading a don
key with an expectant Mary
riding.
This will move around
our sanctuary and property
throughout the Advent sea
son. You see Mary and
Joseph are on a journey to
Bethlehem Jesus is not here
yet. I wanted people to in
clude baby Jesus in with all
the things we look forward to
at Christmas. This all began
while I was serving as Asso
ciate and youth director at
Thomson UMC. I was mak
ing a hospital visit at St.
Joseph hospital during the
Advent season and experi
enced a moving Nativity.
Every week when I returned
the wise men, Mary, Joseph,'
and the shepherds were in a
new location. I enjoyed it so
much that I looked forward
to my hospital visit each
week. With the inspiration
from the St. Joseph the
empty stable was bom as a
part of my Advent ministry
and through the years it has
changed as I purchased dif
ferent Nativity. Advent is not
just the beginning of the
Christian year it is also the
celebration of God willingly
coming to dwell among us.
God seeks to dwell with
each of us. To be our savior,
our hope, our peace, our joy
and our love. As we journey
to Christmas 2021 1 hope you
will enjoy the moving nativ
ity on the outside of Jasper
UMC and maybe join us for
worship inside our sanctuary
or online. Who knows maybe
you will say, as one mom
told me her little boy stated
as they set up their Nativity
with all the pieces, “Pastor
Greg says baby Jesus is not
here yet.”

The Rock.” In these troubled, uncertain
times, we would all do well to cry out to the
Lord to “lead me to the rock that is higher
than I” (Ps. 61.2). Always supportive of our
nation’s heroes in uniform, Mt. Zion will
also take a moment in our morning worship
at 11 to mark the upcoming 80th anniversary
of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The following week, on December 12,
beginning at 5 p.m., we will enjoy a time of
fellowship and fun we call “Crackpots &
Carols.” After gathering in our fellowship
hall to feast on everyone’s favorite holiday
goodies, we will move to our sanctuary for a
time of making melody featuring Christmas
carols old and new.
Among many others singing and sharing,
the Mt. Zion Christmas Choir will be pre
senting, “The Twelve Songs of Christmas”.
On Sunday morning, December 19, we will
present our Christmas program, “What?, No
Angels?” You simply have to come to see
what that is all about.
Also in December, on Tuesday the 14th,
Mt. Zion will once again be hosting a Red
Cross Blood Drive, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Throughout the COVID crisis, blood sup
plies have been running extremely low, and
there is always a critical need during the hol
idays, so please consider taking a moment to
give the gift of life this Christmas.
Note that our Sunday services, as well as a
number of Bible studies and devotions from
Pastor Mock throughout the week, are avail
able for viewing on Mt. Zion’s Facebook
Page.
For more information, please visit
mtzionjasper.org. Mt. Zion is located at 1036

November 28 -

November 28th:
On this day in 1895, the very first auto
race in United States history took place on a
snowy, 38-degree Thanksgiving Day in
Chicago, Illinois. This event was organized
and sponsored by the Times-Herald and six
vehicles entered the competition. The 55-
mile track spanned from the Windy City to
Evanston and the first contestant to cross the
finish line was the champion. Ironically, the
winner was Frank Duryea, who invented
America’s very first gasoline-powered auto
mobile. Duryea was operating a motorized
wagon that averaged seven miles an hour
through the muddy surface, but it ran well
enough to get the job done. The race took an
overall total of 10 hours and 23 minutes, but
seven hours and 53 minutes for Duryea, who
won $2,000.00 and a gold medal.
November 29th:
On this day in 1894, Alabama blanked

he capped it off with an undefeated season

courtesy of Frank Ziegler on 20 carries. Hall
of fame running back, Steve Van Buren,
scored twice while Clyde Scott added 15

Eagles also racked up 25 rushing first downs,
an NFL record.
December 3rd:
On this day in 1999, Ottawa Senators
