Driver’s training for Pickens
High School High Tech students
The Georgia High School
High Tech is partnering with
the State Farm Foundation to
host teen drivers’ education
training for ten Pickens
County High School stu
dents. The State Farm Good
Neighborhood Citizenship
grant award made the Fall
2021 class possible and will
be continued early in 2022
for ten new students enrolled
in the Pickens County High
School High Tech program.
Through the grant, students
meet weekly to prepare for
the written exam they must
pass to obtain their learner’s
permit. At the conclusion of
the training, students will be
transported by Pickens
County School System to the
Canton Department of Dri
ver’s Services to take the
written test. Mike Chambers
and Gwen Allen with High
School High Tech and Pam
Jacobs, CTI Coordinator at
Pickens High School, are co
ordinating the training ses
sions with Ace Driving
School and Pickens County
High School.
Local State Farm repre
sentatives Parish Lowrie,
Alan Home, and Marty
Callahan visited the class to
meet the students and present
the check. We are thrilled that
our students are benefitting
from our partnership with the
State Farm Foundation.

Ga. Sec. of State encourages wise giving
(ATLANTA) - The season
of giving has arrived. Secre
tary Raffensperger is remind
ing Georgians giving to the
less fortunate to give wisely
and responsibly.
“The financial hardships
that many are facing as a re
sult of the COVID-19 pan
demic are unprecedented,”
said Raffensperger. “While
Georgians should continue to
donate to charity during the
holiday season and support
those in need, it’s important
to take the time to ensure
your money is going to a
good cause.”
Georgians that choose to
donate to charities should do
their best to make sure that
their contributions and dona
tions are sent to legitimate or
ganizations that will use their
donations honestly. We en
courage you to research any
organization before making a
donation.
The following tips are ac
tions individuals can take to
make sure that their charita
ble contributions are being
used for those in need:
■ Research charities be
fore you contribute. The
Better Business Bureau, the
Better Business Bureau Wise
Giving Alliance, GuideStar,
Charity Navigator, and Char
ity Watch provide detailed in
formation about charitable

organizations.
■ Be careful of email so
licitations. Be cautious of
people who contact you on
line claiming to be a victim.
Do not respond to unsolicited
emails and do not open any
attachments to these emails.
These attachments may con
tain viruses.
■ If a tax deduction is im
portant to you, make sure
the organization has a tax-
deductible status with the
Internal Revenue Service.
Check the organization’s tax-
exempt status and confirm
that it is in good standing.
“Tax exempt,” “non-profit”,
and “tax-deductible” are not
synonymous. Only “tax-de
ductible” means your contri
bution is deductible on your
income tax return. If you
contribute to a charity, make
sure you get a receipt which
shows the amount of your
contribution and states that
the contribution is tax-de
ductible. The IRS has a
searchable database (“Ex
empt Organizations Check”)
of organizations eligible to
receive tax-deductible chari
table contributions.
■ Review the organiza
tion’s financials. GuideStar,
Charity Navigator, and the
Foundation Center’s 990
Finder allow you to review
copies of nonprofits’ most re
cently filed Form 990s.
These forms contain useful
information on a nonprofit’s
assets, liabilities, reserves,
and
revenue
expenses,
sources.
■ Not all organizations
with charitable-sounding
names are actually chari
ties. Many organizations
adopt names confusingly
similar to well-known chari
ties. Be sure you know ex
actly who is asking for your
contribution.
The Charities Division en
courages Georgians to con
tact division staff if they
receive suspicious charitable
solicitations. For more tips,
