During the holidays, our
thoughts turn more toward
giving. We all want to reach
out to those less fortunate and
to those in need.
If you are looking for a
way to donate your small
change in a way that will
truly make a difference, Op
eration RoundUp is the an
swer. Thousands of
Amicalola EMC members
round up their power bills
each month for charity. It’s a
small amount, usually just
pennies - because it can
never be more than .99 cents
a month and the average do
nation is more like $6 a year.
Through Operation Round
Up, Amicalola EMC mem
bers have donated $2.4 mil
lion to local charities and
qualifying individuals during
the past 21 years. Every
penny stays right here at
home. During this holiday
season, make the choice to
join them and watch your
pennies make a big differ
ence in the lives of those who
need it the most.

New COVID variant reinforces
need for vaccination and testing
Atlanta - The Georgia De
partment of Public Flealth
(DPF1) is closely monitoring
the emergence of a new
COVID variant first detected
in southern Africa. The vari
ant has not been detected in
Georgia at this time.
Named Omicron by the
World Flealth Organization
(WF10), the variant has a
large number of mutations.
Scientists are studying the
variant to determine how
quickly and easily it spreads,
whether it causes more se
vere illness and how well the
current COVID vaccines will
protect against it. So far, a
few dozen COVID cases
caused by Omicron have
been identified in South
Africa, Flong Kong, Israel
and Belgium.
“What is known is that
COVID vaccination helps
stop transmission of infection
which prevents new variants
from emerging,” said Kath
leen E. Toomey, M.D.,
M.P.Fk, commissioner of the
Georgia Department of Pub
lic Flealth. “Vaccination is
more important than ever
with the emergence of this
new variant and the holidays
just around the comer.”
All Georgians over the
age of 5 are now eligible for
COVID vaccination. Booster
doses of vaccine are recom
mended for adults 18 and
older who have completed
their first series of vaccine.
Individuals who have
symptoms of COVID or who
may have been exposed to
someone with COVID
should get tested. Based on
available data, PCR testing
can detect the presence of the
Omicron variant.
To find a COVID vaccine
or COVID testing location
near you log on to
dph.ga.gov.
DPF1 will continue to
monitor information about
Omicron and provide updates
as new information
becomes available.
