park/downtown designs
Residents to be polled for input

At their December meet
ing, the Nelson City Council
voted to approve funding for
a master park concept plan
for their downtown, poten
tially including a new city
center and new city hall
building.
The master plan will be
created by Root Design Stu
dio of Tucker, which has
worked with Nelson in the
past on more limited con
cepts to revamp a play
ground, baseball field, and
two basketball courts. It will
encompass the majority of
the downtown area and cre
ate a design that provides
connectivity and cohesion
between parks and other
areas of interest.
Mayor Sylvia Green and
council would like public
input about the downtown
concept, with Root Design to
poll Nelson residents during
the planning and design
process. The master plan,
which will be developed as a
multi-phase project, will
eventually be presented to
city council for approval be
fore they move ahead to the
construction phase. The proj
ect will be funded with
SPLOST monies and possi
bly grants for some elements,
such as trails and a recreation
center.
“Part of the plan is that
[the architect] is going to get
input...from all the resi
dents,” said council member
Susan Johnston. “He’ll do
surveys... Then [he will]
bring it to you and you guys
can decide, ‘Hey, this is
what’s best for the city. This
is what’s best for the resi
dents,’ and go from there.”
In a later interview Mayor
Green said there will be con
sideration of a city center
area with a recreation center,
and either a revamp of the
current city hall or consider
ation of relocating city hall to
a new building.
“Our current city hall is
not in good shape,” Green
said. “The back is basically
falling off.”
Council has also put out
for bids to demolish two
buildings - an old police sta
tion on Dogwood Pass and
old lodge on School Street -

To the Editor:
This will be of interest to
your readers. I just left Wal-
mart and only 10 percent of
the customers were wearing
masks. Incredible!
This is from a New York
City ER doctor:
• Every patient who got a
third booster COVID-19 vac
cine shot had mild symp
toms. This included sore
throat, fatigue and muscle
pain.
• Patients who had two
doses of Pfizer or Modema
COVID-19 vaccines had
mild symptoms but more
than those who had three
doses. He said there was
more fatigue, more coughing
and more miserable symp
toms overall.
• Those who had one dose
of Johnson & Johnson were
worse, feeling horrible with a
fever for a few days. Tired
ness, weakness, shortness of
breath and cough were also
common COVID-19 symp
toms for this group.
• Every patient that
needed to be admitted was
unvaccinated. The unvacci
nated had “profound short
ness of breath” and their
“oxygen dropped when they
walked,” he said. The unvac
cinated needed “oxygen to
breathe regularly,” he added.

to give architects a clean slate
to work with in that area. The
lodge building, which was at
one time being considered
for use as a recreation center,
would cost around $90,000 to
repair, said Green, who noted
the floor is not attached to the
wall.
Root Design quoted the
city $10,000 for the master
plan design, which is below
the amount that mandates the
city solicit bids. The design
firm will use concept plans
for individual parks the city
has solicited in the past as a
starting point, in addition to
input from residents, council,
and mayor. The funds for the
master plan design will come
from Cherokee County
SPLOST dollars as the ma
jority of the parks and areas
of interest are on the Chero
kee County side of Nelson.
The master plan will not
include the half-basketball
court at the comer of Blue
Ridge Avenue.
Council scheduled a work
session for January 20 to dis
cuss the master park plan
with Root Design Studio.
“Let’s talk about what the
vision is for what you guys
see for the area,” Green said.
