A 2.9-magnitude earth
quake shook parts of Georgia
late on the night of Thursday,
Jan. 20.
According to the United
States Geological Survey
(USGS) the quake occurred
around 11:45 p.m. 16 km
(about 10 miles) northeast of
Eton, Georgia, near the Ten
nessee border.
Hundreds of people across
the area reported “weak” or
“light” shaking to the USGS
while many took to social
media to discuss either hear
ing or feeling it. Many of the
official reports from Georgia
came from Ellijay and Blue
Ridge with very few coming
from Jasper. The Jasper re
ports record “very weak
shaking” and focus more on
the sound, calling it “like dis
tant thunder.”
The USGS website says
that “small shallow earth
quakes sometimes produce
rumbling sounds that can be
heard by people who are very
close to them,” and that
“when earthquakes are
deeper, those vibrations
never reach the surface.”
The quake originated
from the Eastern Tennessee
seismic zone, a zone not
known to have ever had a
large earthquake, while earth-

quakes too small to be felt are
common, and the USGS seis
mographs have recorded
hundreds in recent decades.
Earthquakes happen along
faults in bedrock miles deep,
with the one on Jan. 20 hap
pening at 14.8 km (about
nine miles) underground.
Most of the bedrock in Geor
gia and across the southeast
is several hundred million
years old and it is accord
ingly more difficult for
USGS to determine if a fault
is still active and could cause
an earthquake.

On December 30th Gov.
Brian Kemp signed Geor
gia’s district maps into law,
changing the lines for both
the state government and for
the U.S. House.
It might be a relief to local
voters to find Pickens is no
longer split in either the U.S.
congress or state senate.
According to the congres
sional redistricting map, all
of Pickens County will unite
and become part of Georgia’s
11th congressional district
where Barry Loudermilk is
the incumbent. This is a com
pletely new district for the
county after spending many
years split down the middle
between the 14th and 9th dis
tricts.
On the state level Pickens
County’s district stays the
same in the house with Rick
Jasperse as our local state
representative for the entire
county. Although the extrem
ities of his district have
shifted slightly from the
northwest of Pickens to the
southeast.
In the state senate, Pick
ens will also be reunited,
completely in the District 51
of Steve Gooch. Previously
Gooch had represented the
eastern half of the county and

Chuck Payne the western split, making it much simpler
part.
Four lawsuits have been
filed challenging the redis
tricting plans, so it’s possible
more change could come.
According to Stacey God
frey at the Pickens County
Office of Elections and Reg
istration, it is helpful that the
county will no longer be
to report results and answer
ballot questions from voters.
Previously they had to ex
plain it depended on what
part of the county you lived
in as to which ballot you
would see.
