Episcopal Church of the Holy Family elects vestry members
Holy Family’s leadership team - (L-R) Allan Deniro, Jeannine Krenson, Terry Nicholson, Julie Goodan, Andy Ed
wards, Patricia Stimmel (clerk), Judy Wyndham, Rosemary Lovelace, Roger Schultz, Jim Reid and George Yandell (Rec
tor).
On Sunday, January 30th
the Episcopal Church of the
Holy Family in Jasper held
its annual parish meeting in
which they assessed their ac
complishments in 2021 and
elected new vestry members
for 2022.
With an estimated 266 ac
tive adult members, Holy
Family is in excellent finan
cial condition thanks to the
generosity of its parishioners.
For over 36 years the parish
has sustained its strong sup
port to both local and global
charities.
The vestry serves as the
governing and decision-mak
ing body of the parish. More
importantly, it also serves as
the visioning and goal-setting
body of the parish. Newly
elected vestry members with
three-year terms of service
are Julie Goodan, Terry
Nicholson and Andy Ed
wards. They join currently
serving members Jeannine
Krenson, Allan DeNiro,
Roger Schultz, Rosemary
Lovelace, Jim Reid and Judy
Wyndham.
Everyone is welcome at

“Valor in modern times” topic Mountain Light
On Sunday, February 20, Rev. Marti Keller "Women (and
Persons) of Valor." From the biblical roots of our Unitarian
Universalist living tradition comes a passage in Proverbs, a
hymn that describes and honors what was thought of as a
woman of valor, defined by one contemporary Jewish social
commentator as personal bravery. What did this quality look
like when the phrase originated? What does valor look like
in modem times?
Please visit our website (mluuc.org) for more information
on how we are operating during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
You will find details there on how to join via Zoom, as well.
Mountain Light UUC, 2502 Tails Creek Road (GA-282
West), in Ellijay, welcomes guests of all faiths, ethnicities,
and gender identifications. Our worship service begins at
10:30 a.m. Join us at 10 for fellowship.

Years ago, we were called Women of the
Church but now we are known simply as
Presbyterian Women (PW). If you are a
woman and a Presbyterian, you are automat
ically a member of PW. Led by our presi
dent, Betty Lohman, our ladies at Fellowship
Presbyterian are mainly retired, active moms,
grandmothers, and widows who live out our
faith in a number of church and community
activities.
We meet the fourth Monday of each
month (February 28 this month) at 10 a.m. in
our Fellowship Hall to study the Bible and
distribute our offerings to mission projects
both local and worldwide.
What you might not understand is the
scope of our giving. For a relatively small
group, we give big! In 2021 we gave over
$4,500. We distributed money to Georgia

“The Redemption
of the Cross ”
By Rev.
Benton
Laughlin
Last
week we
talked
about
what it means when we
become followers of Jesus
Christ and receive a “New
Life in Christ.” This hap
pens when we confess our
sins, invite Jesus into our
hearts, confess Jesus as
our Lord and savior and
are baptized in the name
of the Father, Son and
Holy Spirit. We receive
the gift of new life in
Christ. Our salvation is a
gift from God that we
cannot earn. Why? It is
because of the redemption
of the cross. “Christ re
deemed us from the curse
of the law by becoming a
curse for us. (Galatians
3:13)”
Scripture teaches there
are two truths about the
death of Christ on the
cross. First, the redemp
tion of the cross. Christ
died for you and me and
took all our sins upon
himself. Jesus delivered
us from the curse of sin.
Second, the fellowship of
the cross. Jesus included
you and me inHis death
thereby we are included in
the effectiveness of his
own death. Jesus defeated

* Is Invisible
s "For we know in part and we prophesy in part,
but when completeness comes, what is in part
disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child,
I thought like a child, I reasoned tike a child. When I
became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind
me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror;
then we shall see face to face. Now / know in part;
then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known."
—1 Corinthians 13:9-12 NIV
P hysics provides a wealth of examples which illustrate that we see but a tiny
fraction of the universe. Visible light is a tiny fraction of the electromagnetic
spectrum, and whereas our galaxy (the Milky Way) was believed by scientists
less than a hundred years ago to be the only galaxy, it is now known that there
are at least 100 billion galaxies besides our own, each galaxy containing some
100 billion stars. The universe is quite large, it is expanding, and it is expanding
at an accelerating rate. And consider that the entire universe, some 14 billion
years ago, was confined to an area smaller than an atom. There are so many
ways in which what we see and experience is just the tip of the iceberg that we
would do well to be humble. Overconfidence can be dangerous in the realms of
both knowledge and action. The psychologists Amos Tversky and Daniel
Kahneman have done seminal work exploring cognitive biases (the ways in which
our thinking leads us to make faulty judgements or errors). One of these biases
is the “availability heuristic,” which leads us to favor data and facts that are ready
to hand. We give prominence to recent events and are biased towards what we
know, when in fact what we don’t know can be very important to the issue or
judgement we are making. Be humble in the face of what you do not know.
