sin.
Galatians 3:13 teaches us
three important things. The
first is that through the law
God placed a curse on all sin
and all acts that are sinful in
God’s eye. The second is,
Christ took that curse upon
himself. Jesus became a
curse himself. By doing so
Jesus destroyed its power.
The third, in the cross we
have redemption from sin
and all its power for all eter
nity.
In the Garden of Eden
God pronounced a curse on
the earth and all that belongs
to it. The people of Israel un
derstood from scripture that
“anyone who is hung on a
tree is under God’s curse”
(Deuteronomy 21:23).
On the cross Jesus took
that curse upon himself.
Why? Because of the love
and grace of God the Father,
God the Son, and God the
Holy Spirit. Because of Jesus
death on the cross the repen
tant sinner can rejoice in the
absolute assurance that their
sin is forever forgiven for all
who believe and are faithful
in Jesus Christ.
The redemption of the
Cross is at the center and
foundation of the gospel. All
believers who receive it and
live it unto death on this earth
are assured of the life ever
lasting. Amen.

Mt. Zion Baptist

members of family
Mt. Zion Baptist Church
believes the Bible to be the
inspired, inerrant Word of
God, our only and all suffi
cient source of truth for faith
and practice.
Through its pages we
learn of our sin and of a Sav
ior who died on a bloody
cross to redeem us. All of our
ministry gatherings focus on
“the Word made flesh,” be
ginning with our Sunday
morning worship services at
11, which teach and edify not
only with the preaching of
what Paul calls “sound doc
trine,” but also with Christ
centered music of “psalms,
hymns and spiritual songs.”
We offer Bible study
small groups at 10 a.m. (we
still call it Sunday School),
and have separate classes for
men and ladies, in addition to
a general adult class, and
classes for youth and chil
dren. Our ladies delve deep
into scripture through Com
munity Bible Study, which
meets every Thursday morn
ing and evening; a Men’s
Fellowship supper is held the
last Friday of the month. Our
children and teens meet on
Wednesday’s for Word of
Life Clubs, the same night
we offer Zion Life classes,
which are currently studying
the life of David. We also
have a midweek prayer meet
ing on Wednesday evenings
as well.
We believe that a person’s
relationship with the Lord is
directly reflected in their
knowledge and application of
His Word, and in their com
mitment to and service
through their church, which
is His body.
We invite and welcome
our friends and neighbors to
join with us as we seek to
“grow in grace, and in the
knowledge of our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter
3.18) For more information

February 6-February 12
February 6th:
On this day in 2011, the Green Bay Pack
ers won their fourth Super Bowl champi
onship following a 31-25 victory over the
Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV.
Packers quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, was
voted the Most Valuable Player after com
pleting 24 of 39 passes for 304 yards and
three touchdowns. Two of his scores went to
Greg Jennings while the other went to Jordy
Nelson, who made nine catches for 140
yards. Green Bay’s defense twice intercepted
Ben Roethlisberger before forcing three take
aways. One of those picks resulted in a 37-
yard score by Nick Collins in the opening
period. The Packers built a 21-3 lead, but the
Steelers closed the gap behind Roethlis-
berger’s 25 completions, 263 yards and two
touchdowns. Down by six with less than two
minutes remaining, Pittsburgh mounted a
final drive with the hopes of getting a win
ning score. Of course, Green Bay’s defense
rose to the occasion by holding off Big Ben’s
final attempts.
February 7th:
On this day in 1998, the Dallas Stars or
ganization retired the number seven that was
worn by former center, Neal Broten, who
played 992 games for the club over 16 sea
sons. Broten racked up 867 points (274 goals
and 593 assists) and crossed the 100-point
plateau during the 1985-86 campaign. He
also made two All-Star appearances in 1983
and 1986 and played for the Stars while the
franchise was located in Minnesota and Dal
las. Broten was voted by Minnesota Wild
fans as the greatest hockey player ever from
Minnesota in 2009.
February> 8th:
On this day in 1936, the NFL’s very first
draft took place at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in
Philadelphia. The hometown Eagles held the
first pick, using that selection on University
of Chicago halfback, Jay Berwanger, who
was also the very first Heisman Trophy win
ner in 1935. However, his pro career never
took off. Berwanger never played a down for
the Eagles due to a contract dispute and was
dealt to the Chicago Bears, where he faced
the same issues with owner, George Halas.
After giving up on football, Berwanger
worked as a rubber company associate, part-
time college coach and sportswriter.
February 9th:
On this day in 1980, the United States
Olympic Hockey Team faced the Soviet
Union in an exhibition game at Madison
Square Garden. This contest was a com
pletely one-sided affair as the Soviets routed
the Americans, 10-3. The United States used
this setback as motivation and got the last
laugh by upsetting the USSR, 4-3, during
Olympic play.
February 10th:
On this day in 1924, Bucky Harris became
baseball’s youngest manager when he was
hired as the skipper for the Washington Sen
ators. This move paid off as the 27-year-old
Harris led the Senators to a World Series title
in his first season at the helm. He became a
member of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1975
and the Washington Nationals Ring of Honor
in 2010.
February 11th:
On this day in 1997, Bill Parcells was
hired as the head coach of the New York Jets.
Known for his ability to turn struggling fran
chises around, Parcells led the Giants to two
Super Bowl titles during his first stint in the
Big Apple. He also led the New England Pa
triots to a Super Bowl appearance in 1996.
The Jets were coming off a 1-15 campaign
before Parcells’ arrival. He led them to a win
ning record in his first season before taking
them to the AFC Championship Game in year
two. Parcells compiled an overall record of
30-20 during his time with the Jets.
February 12th:
On this day in 1934, Bill Russell was bom
in Monroe, Louisiana. All Russell did was
become a hall of fame center for the Boston
Celtics. He also won 11 championship rings,
the most of any player in NBA history. Rus
sell is tied with Montreal Canadiens Hall of
fame center, Henri Richard, for the most
rings won by a professional athlete in North
American sports history.

the inside play of Darlington
vs. the sharp shooting of the
Nettes. Darlington came out
strong and built a nine point
lead in the first half before
the Nettes closed the game to
22-25 at the half. A 12-8 third
quarter by the Nettes gave the
home team a 34-33 lead
going into the fourth. Both
teams battled down the
stretch before the Nettes got
a stronger grip on the lead
and finished with a 50-44
win. This moved the Nettes
win streak to 18 straight.
After the game, Coach
Thomas talked about how
proud he was of the team’s
ability to find a path to vic
tory but that “the job is not
done.”
“There are two more re

Thomas said. “Our goal is to

game helped prepare us, we
still have work to do.”
The Nettes have been pa
