PHS soccer doesn’t let cold weather slow action

PHS soccer players Hannah Gibson, left, and #1 Dylan Imbriano get in on the action
against the Raiders. The girls ’ team lost 0-1 in a defensive battle against the Lady Rebels.
The girls’ team lost in a
defensive battle, the Lady
Rebels coming out on top, 0-
1.
On Friday, Feb. 4, the
Dragons traveled to North
Forsyth High School for their
first away matches of the sea
son. The extreme cold and
high winds, coupled with the
rabid Raider fans, made for
an inhospitable environment
for the players and Dragon
faithful.
It was quite a battle be
tween the teams, starting
with a Raider goal within the
first two minutes of the
game. Jose Sanchez an
swered with a goal for the
Dragons; another by brother
Juan Sanchez, plus a second
Raider goal made the score 2-
2 at half. Outstanding goal
keeping on both ends of the
pitch kept the score much
lower than it might have
been. Jack Lowrie was in
goal for the Dragons, while
NFHS split halves with two
keepers.
The 7A Raiders and 4A
Dragons both went on to
score two additional goals,
the last coming in the final
minutes of the game. The
match ended in a 4-4 tie, and
the Dragons remain unde
feated. Juan Sanchez had
three goals for the night.
Coach Charlotte Haughwout
said, “These boys are on a
mission to have the best sea
son in PHS history, and they
proved that in how they
played together against N.
Forsyth on Friday night in the
extreme cold weather. The
positive energy, hard work
and dedication the boys are
exhibiting every time they
step on the field makes me so
proud of each one of them.”
The girls had several
starters out Friday night, and
in spite of a stellar effort by
goalkeeper Lauren Gregory,
the Dragons lost 5-1. Eleina
Bryant scored for Pickens.
The JV teams played at
Lumpkin County High
School Jan. 28. The girls lost
0-7; the boys lost 1-2.
Upcoming matches for the
varsity teams are Coahulla
Creek of Dalton, Feb. 8 at
home, and an away game Fri
day, Feb. 11 against the
Gilmer Bobcats. The
Coahulla Creek boys team
won the 3A state champi
onship last season. JV boys
play Dawson Feb. 7.

information, visit www.pick-

Besides outstanding goalkeeping, Jack Lowrie also
added his first score with a penalty kick last week.

Racing recap of The Busch Classic
the pole sitter was Kyle
Busch. He led the first 2 laps
before Tyler Reddick got by
him at the end of lap 3. Red
dick held onto the lead for 51
laps as the race remained
green for 52 laps. On lap 53,
the first caution came out
when Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
spun out after getting hit
from behind by Harrison
Burton. Ironically, at the
same time, Denny Hamlin
had a power steering failure
in his car to where he could
turn through the comers and
that caused him to be the first
car out of the race. The green
flag came back out on lap 54,
because NASCAR did not
count any laps off from the
race during a caution period.
Right after they went back
green. The second caution of
the day came out when Chase
Briscoe, who made his way
up into the top 5 and seemed
to have a car that could con
tend for the win, had a drive-
line failure to his car, and
coincidentally the leader
Tyler Reddick had the exact
same issue which gave the
lead back to Kyle Busch who
led 64 laps in this race, and
62 straight after Reddick’s is
sues. Both drivers were now
out of the race and their
chances to win were over.
The race restarted on lap 55,
and remained green for 10
laps before local talent Chase
Elliott wheel-hops and spins
out in turn 3 on lap 65. For
tunately, this would not end
his race and he was still on
the lead lap. The race went
green again on lap 66 and it
once again remained green
for 10 laps before the caution
for the midpoint of the race
came out at roughly 7:02 PM.
They stopped the race for a
short concert break where
rapper Ice Cube came out
and performed. The concert
started at 7:07 p.m. and lasted
only for about 10 minutes.
The race resumed back
under green on lap 76, and
Kyle Busch held onto the
lead for much of the remain
der of the race. On that same
lap, Ryan Preece lost the
brakes in his car, which
ended his race. The race re
mained green up to lap 115
when Ryan Blaney had a bro
ken right rear suspension
after getting accidently put in
the wall by Erik Jones, and
his race came to an end.
Blaney afterwards showed
his displeasure with Jones by
throwing his Hans device at
him after he got out of his car.
On the next restart, Kyle Lar
son slammed against the side
of Justin Haley on the front
stretch, and it caused Haley
to hit the inside wall really
hard and it took him out of
the race which is a big shame
because he was running top 5
in the race all day long before
that happened. The reason
why Larson did that is be
cause he and Haley were hit
ting each other a few times
throughout the race, and on
that restart, Haley hit the side
of Larson again due to Lar
son’s teammate William
Byron bumping him from be
hind. But Larson didn’t know
that and assumed that it was
all on Haley, so it was just an
unfortunate circumstance of
a driver getting their race ru
ined due to something that
was not on them. At the point
of the caution, Joey Logano
was slightly ahead of Kyle
Busch, so he was the leader
on the next restart and we fi
nally had a new leader in the
race since Busch took it after
Reddick had his driveline
failure. Logano held onto the
lead, but Kyle Busch was
starting to close in on him
with about 20 to go, and got
as close to right on Logano’s
bumper. However, due to
Logano being a really tal
ented driver, he was able to
still hold off Kyle Busch
when he got to his bumper
and in the last few laps,
Kyle’s car seemed to go
away a little because Logano
started to pull away from him
a little. That helped Logano
go on to win the first ever
NASCAR exhibition race at
the LA Coliseum.
Now that I’ve recapped the
race, it’s time for what I
thought of it. Personally, I
don’t think the race lived up
to the hype behind it, but I
thought it was still a good
race and a good first race
with the NextGen car. It was
definitely not great consider
ing 2 drivers had the same
issue back-to-back, so that
was really not a good look for
the NextGen car’s first race.
Also considering that the
track was only a quarter mile
long and a flat track, it was
very hard to pass, so there
was not a whole lot of pass
ing during the race. With all
of that being said though, I
still thought it was good be
cause there was still a lot of
battling going on. Since the
track is very small, that
makes the cars run really
close to each other which
made for a lot of battling
through out the field, and if
drivers are still battling for
position then it can still be a
good race, because it makes
the race still be entertaining
even if there is not much
passing. Some people may
not think it was good for
there not being much pass
ing, but for me personally, I
thought it was still good for
that reason. Now that this
race is over, its time to head
to the Super Bowl of
NASCAR, the Great Ameri
can Race, the Daytona 500 in
2 weeks. We will see who
will start out the season the
best and win the 500, and see
how the true regular season
race with the NextGen cars,
and the first superspeedway
race with these cars will turn
out.
Coming up next week:
Bumpin ’ and Bangin ’
