Friday night was the start
of a great adventure for 6th,
7th & 8th grade students and
their WyldLife leaders at
Carolina Point, a Young Life
camp in Brevard, NC. Kids
from Pickens County accom
panied their high school/col
lege leaders and had a
fantastic weekend. Our local
students were joined by other
WyldLife groups from
around the southeast for a
weekend of fun activities and
had the opportunity to expe
rience God’s amazing cre
ation.
All throughout the week
end, kids and leaders gath
ered for club, where they
sang, laughed, played high
energy games and had the
pleasure of hearing from the
camp speaker, Jason Cha, a
Young Life staff member
from Tennessee. He shared
with kids the amazing story
of God’s love for them and
did it in a way that was en
gaging and out of the ordi
nary. Saturday afternoon was
an exciting time, with a camp
full of adventuresome things
to do. Kids drove go-karts,
played archery tag, com
peted in cabin challenges,
threw some flour bombs ...
just had a blast.
WyldLife leaders are
about relationships, think
kids are great, and want the
best for each of them. Lead
ers spend time with kids all
year long, go to camp with
them and experience every
thing the kids do. Then lead
ers come home with them,
continue to build friendships
and provide a positive role
model for them. In WyldLife,
we see kids’ lives changed as
they hear about and en
counter Jesus Christ.
Ask any student who at
tended camp this past week
end and you will hear about
an experience of fun, adven
ture, grace and truth. Kids
made memories that will last
a lifetime and encountered a

God who loves them and is in great
pursuit of them. WyldLife is for
every 6th, 7th & 8th grader — re
gardless of ability, circumstance,
race or culture. If you are interested

w MOUNTAINSIDE
From My Desk to Your Home
Dear Piedmont Mountainside,
We’ve entered February, the month of love. Most of us associate February
with Valentine’s Day, and who doesn’t enjoy flowers, decadent chocolate and a
romantic dinner?
Did you know Richard Cadbury, son of Cadbury founder John Cadbury, in
troduced the first heart-shaped box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day in 1861?
Today, over 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolates are sold around the
world each year.
February is also when we promote heart health awareness and the impor
tance of heart disease prevention. While heart disease kills more women than
any other illness and a staggering one in three will die from heart disease, it’s
important to know that you can control certain risk factors.
One of the best ways to prevent heart disease is to know your numbers.
These numbers include:
Blood pressure; Check your blood pressure regularly. If you find out you have
high blood pressure, it can often be controlled by a healthy meal plan and regular
exercise, but medication is available if lifestyle adjustments aren’t enough.
Cholesterol; Have your cholesterol numbers checked regularly. If you do de
velop high cholesterol, diet modification or medication can help reduce your
risk for heart disease.
Body mass index (BMI):Your BMI is calculated based on height and weight.
Maintaining a healthy diet will improve your BMI and decrease your risk for
heart disease. Eat low-fat, low-salt foods most of the time and fresh fruits and
vegetables.
Fasting blood glucose (also known as fasting blood sugar):This test is taken
after you haven’t eaten for about eight hours. Ideally, you want your number to
be less than 100.
Don’t smoke! According to the CDC, smoking is a major cause of cardio
vascular disease (CVD) and causes one of every four deaths from CVD.
A leader in cardiac care, Piedmont Mountainside Hospital is an ACC accred
ited chest pain center and is well prepared to treat cardiac patients. I invite you
to visit piedmont.org to learn more about our Piedmont Heart Institute pro
grams and services, including heart care and wellness tips and information.
If you have risk factors for heart disease, I encourage you to make time now
to visit your primary care physician or cardiologist to discuss further. In the
event you do experience signs or symptoms of heart attack, including chest,
back or jaw pain, shortness of breath, nausea or vomiting, anxiety, excessive fa
tigue or weakness, a feeling of fullness, or pain that travels down one or both
arms, call 9-1-1 immediately.
I’d like to thank each of you for the love and unwavering support you show
to our patients, visitors and each other. I am so grateful for our Piedmont Moun
tainside family.
Always,
Denise Ray,
President and Chief Executive Officer
Piedmont Mountainside Hospital
