The county will see a big change in leadership as both of the district com mission posts will have a new elected official fill the role next year. Last year Becky Denney re signed from the east dis trict commission post, and west district commis sioner Jerry Barnes has announced he will not seek reelection. Board of Education Post #2 (currently held by Aaron Holland); Post #3 (currently held by Tucker Green); and Post #5 (cur rently held by Steve Smith) are also up for election. Qualifying will be held March 7 - 11 at the Pick ens County Board of Elec tions & Registration See Qualifying on 11A Barnes will not seek re-election After much considera tion, I have decided to not seek re-election for the District 1 Commissioner in the 2022 election. It has been an incredible honor and a privilege to repre sent District 1 over these last 10 years. I would like to offer a sincere thanks to all of those who supported me and allowed me this op portunity to serve in this special place that I’ve called home since birth. I’d like to express my gratitude to my fellow commission members for their partnership and col laboration during my tenure. It has been a true joy to work with these ca pable and caring people. The future of this county is in the capable hands of the voters this November. I wish the next group of leaders great success in continuing to move Pick ens County forward. The elections office will relocate to the Georgia State Patrol office on Camp Road. The future of this county building has not been determined. By Angela Reinhardt Staff Writer areinhardt@piekensprogress.com The Pickens County Board of Elec tions & Registration Office will relo cate to a portion of the Georgia State Patrol Post #28 building after recent negotiations between the county and GSP. The deal was announced by Pick ens Commission Chair Kris Stancil at the Thursday, Feb. 17 commissioners’ meeting where representatives from the GSP post, including GSP Commander Tim Nichols, were in attendance. The GSP office, located at 3100 Camp Road in Jasper, was constructed by Pickens County in 2004 during the Billy Newton administration. The county entered into a 20-year lease with Georgia State Patrol at that time. The GSP has leased the space for $1 a year for the last 18 years. The county recently met with GSP to renegotiate the lease and better uti lize the building’s space, some of which has gone unused since 2004. The GSP building is 8,500 sq. ft. in total. State Patrol office Inside this Edition: By Dan Pool Editor dpool@pickensprogress.com The eastern portion of Cove Road between Old Mill White Road and Steve Tate Road will be closed for much of next week. Georgia Transmissions, which han dles the large regional powerlines, in formed the county that they will be working to reset power poles in that area next week. This is completely sep arate from the regular utility work along Cove Road involving burying lines, according to information from the county. Commission Chair Kris Stancil said work is scheduled to last from Monday, February 28 through Monday, March 7.
