In 2010, Reinhardt College became Reinhardt University. The theme of his inaugu ral address was "Salt and Light," and Roberts said that the university represented "the salt of the earth and a light on the hill." He added, "The university is something outside of us, yet it is us." Again, he alluded to the school's humble beginnings and encouraged everyone in attendance to continue their contributions to the school by quoting from one of Geor gia's most famous and beloved authors, Joel Chan dler Harris. He has served in the institution's administra tion for nearly a decade, hav ing been hired in 2013 as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Faculty Dean. In 2017, he was named First Provost and two years later became Executive Vice Pres ident before being appointed as interim president the fol lowing year. A native of Maryville, Tenn., Roberts grew up on his family's 50-acre farm in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. He earned both Bachelors and Masters degrees in English Literature and Language from Middle Tennessee State University before receiving his Doctorate from the Union Institute and University.
