Georgia Foundation for Agriculture
and Georgia EMC donate books
MACON - The Georgia
Foundation for Agriculture
and Georgia Electric Mem
bership Corporation (EMC)
are jointly promoting agricul
tural literacy by donating
copies of the children’s book
“How to Grow a Monster” to
nearly 400 libraries in the
Georgia Public Library Serv
ice (GPLS).
The Georgia Foundation
for Agriculture (GFA) and
Georgia EMC have given
each county Farm Bureau in
Georgia enough books for
every public library in the
county. Pickens County Farm
Bureau recently delivered a
copy of the book to the Pick
ens County Library.
“How to Grow a Mon
ster,” written by Kiki Thorpe
and illustrated by Barbara
Bongini, explores the theme
of gardening and includes a
gardening-related activity for
children to try themselves.
Tapping into the popular
makers movement (hands-on
learning), the book is part of
a series of fun, easy-to-read
stories that focus on problem
solving and hands-on action.
The American Farm Bureau
Foundation for Agriculture
selected the book as its 2022
Book of the Year for its accu
rate and positive portrayal of
agriculture.
The GFA is thrilled to
partner with Georgia EMC
and Georgia F arm Bureau to
donate the book. The GFA
began donating accurate
books about agriculture to
each public library in Geor
gia in 2016. Georgia EMC
joined the foundation in this
endeavor in 2018.

Farmers Market opens
for the season April 2
It’s that time of year again. This Saturday, April 2nd,
the 7:30 a.m. ringing of the bell will open the 23rd season
of the Jasper Farmers Market. The market will be located
in the Park & Ride lot next to Lee Newton Park every Sat
urday from 7:30 a.m. till noon.
Lion Vanessa Stanley from the Atlanta Metro Lions Club
with Jasper Lions Club President Pauline Maturo.
On March 24, the Jasper
Lions Club welcomed
Vanessa Stanley from the At
lanta Metro Club. She is a
past district governor and
very active Lions Club mem
ber for 30 years.
She came to present to us
information about the Lions
Club International Founda
tion or LCIF.
The foundation was
formed in 1968 and supports
the efforts of Lions Clubs all
over the world. ALL funds go
to charity. The mission of
LCIF is to provide grants all
around the world.
Our own community of
Jasper was the recipient of
$246,000 plus $10,000 from
our Jasper Lions Club in
2019. This money was used
to set up the Vision Clinic at
the Good Samaritan Health
and Wellness Center in
Jasper. LCIF has also as
sisted with Tornado Relief in
our area.
Currently, the Foundation
is very involved with sending
money and humanitarian re
lief to Ukraine.
Some interesting facts that
Vanessa presented are:
There are 1.4 million
Lions worldwide. 50,000
clubs in 200 countries. 284
million people have been
served in some way. 17.66
million have received indi
vidual assistance. LCIF usu
ally gets the money they send
to the people who need it in
24 to 48 hours.
There are eight areas of
need or “pillars” that the
LCIF is focusing on cur
rently. By giving $100, one
of these things can be accom
plished:
1. Vision—2 cataract
surgeries
2. Youth — Lions
Quest curriculum for an en
tire classroom for one year
3. Disaster Relief—
Immediate relief for 4 vic
tims of a natural disaster
4. Humanitarian Ef
forts—Measles vaccination
for 100 children
5. Diabetes—Screen
ings for 18 at-risk people
6. Childhood Can
