Vietnam veterans came
out on March 29th at Vet
eran’s Park for their day of
recognition which honors
some 2.59 million Americans
who served during the 1955-
1975 war. Presidents Obama
and Trump, who signed the
Vietnam War Veterans
Recognition Act of 2017,
both called for the long over
due official day of honor.
The North Georgia De
tachment of the Marine
Corps League sponsors the
local national remembrance.
Commandant Bill Craig said
to the group, “thank you for
your courage, sacrifices and
service to our country.”
Some 58,307 American
troops were killed and
304,000 wounded in the war.
Plus, 75,000 returned se
verely disabled which was
300% higher than WW2
Craig said.
Add to that list around
1,585 military personnel, as
of October 2020, that are
missing in action and one can
tell it was a costly war in
human life.
“We want to thank you
and we support you in every
thing you are going through,”
said Commission Chair Kris
Stancil. “No one can imagine
what you faced if they have
not been there.”
The commandant wanted
non veterans to have some
idea of what war is like stat
ing, “combat is fast, unfair,
cruel, dirty and is forever
branded into one’s memory.”
