As we approach the cele
bration of Easter at the end
of this week, many may be
lieve that it will be over after
Sunday.
For believers, we know
Easter Sunday is just the be
ginning. Volunteers of Pick
ens Community Thrift Store
support that belief and wish
to share the joys of Easter
with the community at our
first annual Easter Gospel
Song Fest which will be held
on Saturday, April 23 behind
the store located at 110
Samaritan Drive, from noon
- 5 p.m. The store will re
main open until 4 p.m. for
visitors to shop indoors if de
sired.
The festival will feature
live Christian music of
gospel to contemporary and
a little in-between. Songs
heard will be old time fa
vorites and a few originals
and all of it will be music to
the ears. The musical enter
tainment is the highlight of
the day, but by no means all
of it. The entire festival will
be staged as though visitors
have traveled back in time to
visit the Jerusalem market
place as it would have been
in the days of Christ.
All volunteers of the store
will be dressed in Biblical at
tire and the marketplace will
be staged as realistically as
possible to capture the spirit
of the event.
Street vendors will be
setup “selling their goods”
for the price of a “gold coin
or jewel.” Be prepared to
barter for your purchases as
it would be at any market
place of the times.
Shoppers will find delec
table food samples of that
era as well as plenty of trin
kets and bobbles for all.
Kabobs will be hot off the
grill and of course hot dogs
and burgers for the less ad
venturesome.
Bible creatures will be
there to pet and pose for a
snap shot in our kid friendly
petting zoo. A special thanks
to folks from the Cowboy
Church for providing the
livestock and handlers.
Come see miniature horses,
goats and their kids, chick
ens and more. It’s sure to
bring a smile on everyone’s
face.
Local non-profit groups
will also be present to share
their visions of help for our
community. Take time and
visit and learn what great
things are happening in Pick
ens County.
Perhaps you wonder
about the coins and jewels.
Be advised that our tax ac
cessor will be present along
with his Roman Guard to re
fund you a bag of coins and
jewels as a gift from Cesar.
Spend it wisely. Additional
coins and jewels may be pur
chased for a trivial amount
should you need more.
Thrift Store President
Terry “Sarge” Bishop, came
up with the idea of a Biblical
marketplace with song be
cause he wanted the store to
do something extra special
for the community. “To my
knowledge, a Biblical reen
actment setting like this has
never been done outside of a
church setting,” he ex
plained. “Easter and what it
represents comes to life in
this environment. We want
everyone to experience
that.”
We hope to have a big
crowd, so parking is being
extended to the CARES
parking lot and Good Sam
Clinic. We will have a
hayride shuttle to bring
guests to our entrance
point,” he added.
Mark your calendars now
and tell your friends. This is
a great family fun filled day
that will make lasting mem
ories for all. Remember...
Easter is never over. Come
experience our Easter
Gospel Song Fest, and share
the joy.

their communities. While an
individual piece of litter is
often very small, the aggre
gate problem of litter has
substantial consequences.”
What can we do to ad
dress this persistent problem?
Roadside cleanups are a start
because people are more
likely to litter in places that
are already littered. KPB is
here to help.
The Keep Pickens Beauti
ful Team has heard the com
ments from many members
of our community that the
roadside litter is a concern.
We are inviting everyone to
come help address the issue -
come get involved with
KPB’s Pickup Pickens. The
best way to keep our county
clean is to start with clean
roadsides, and then work to
gether to keep them clean.
KPB has several more
events scheduled in April for
the Great American Cleanup.

ens County while connecting

The Great American
Cleanup Month in Pickens
County is off to a great start.
Keep Pickens Beautiful has
hosted two events to kick off
the month of cleanups - an
Edible Jasper garden cleanup
& prep, and a roadside
cleanup event on Carver Mill
Road. So much has been ac
complished.
Keeping Pickens County
clean is a pillar of KPB’s
mission. The Adopt-A-Road
program is one of our oldest
and most effective initiatives
with volunteers from
throughout the county who
walk many miles each year
collecting hundreds of bags
of trash.
This past weekend, a
small but mighty team partic
ipated in our first roadside
cleanup event. Despite the
chilly weather, most of
Carver Mill Road was
cleaned up - between Hinton
Milling and Scarecom Creek
the truck was filled with:
•21 bags of trash
•Two tires
•Several yard signs
•A coffee maker and other
larger miscellaneous items
Next time you drive down
Carver Mill Road and you
enjoy the scenery and vistas,
be sure to notice how clean
the roadsides are.
Roadside trash is a na
tional problem. Keep Amer
ica Beautiful recently
published their 2020 Na
tional Litter Study, and it is
filled with interesting infor
mation and statistics. Accord
ing to their study:
•There are nearly 50 bil
lion pieces of trash on our
roadsides and in our water
ways
•This equates to 152
pieces of litter for every US
resident
•Cigarette butts continue
to be the single most littered
item in the United States
•This is a 54% decrease
since 2009 so we’re improv
ing
•90% of Americans still

claim that litter is a problem
in their state.
“One of the reasons why
U.S. residents believe that lit
ter is a problem in their state
is because they know that lit
ter negatively impacts their
communities. A large major
ity of U.S. residents agree
that the presence of litter af
fects the environment, water
ways, property taxes, home
values, tourism and busi

health and safety in their
communities. Americans un
