it is easy to see how she
would assume the worst. We
can understand how her vi
sion struggled. Not only had
the darkness affected her vi
sion; she was equally im
pacted by her state of mind as
she viewed the empty tomb.
The anxiety, experiences, and
grief that she carried influ
enced how she saw things.
Mary was going to struggle
to see anything in a positive
light. Seeing the empty tomb,
her first thought was who
stole the body? Consumed
by darkness on the inside and
out, she struggled to see and
understand what was happen

Sometimes we find our
selves in situations like
Mary’s. When we do, cir
cumstances or difficult
events cloud our vision. Eco
nomics, unhealthy world
views, fears, relational stress,
or workload cause us to not
see as well. Those things can
fog our lenses. All these
things, plus others, tend to af
fect how we see the world.

Learn about the
Gospel of John at
Holy Family
All are invited to adult ed-
Mary didn’t realize that
even in the darkness Jesus
was nearby. That God was
still in her midst. She didn’t
think God could be found in
the darkness. In that moment,
Jesus invited Mary to see in
the dark. To see beyond her
grief and her pain. To en
counter God this way was
unimaginable to her.
Like Mary as we some
times stumble in our dark
ness. We feel alone, scared,
or uncertain. We struggle to
see beyond the darkness. We
often feel that God is
nowhere near and has for
saken us.
The power of the resurrec
tion and the spirit of God is
bigger and more powerful
than all the forces that cause
us to be in darkness. God is
present and calls out to us as
we walk in darkness; inviting
us to find redemption, pur
pose, and the strength to keep
going.
As we celebrate on Easter,
we can remember a God that
was found in the darkness;
we can celebrate a God who
is stronger than the darkness,
a God that invites us to see
when things get dark.

There are many things in
John’s Gospel that are unique
and not in the other three syn
optic gospels (Matthew,
Mark and Luke) including
Miracles unique to John; the
post-resurrection appear
ances and words that Jesus
speaks. The “Jesus” in the
Gospel of John is very differ
ent from the “Jesus” in the
synoptic gospels.
In conjunction with this
education opportunity, please
plan to also attend the quiet
communion service at 8 a.m.
beforehand or the musical
service and communion at
10:30 a.m. afterwards.

April 10-April 16
April 10th:
On this day in 1934, the
Chicago Blackhawks won
their first Stanley Cup in fran
chise history. Chicago cap
tured the crown during an era
where the finals were con
structed under a best-of-five
layout. The best-of-seven for
mat wasn’t established until
the 1938-39 campaign. Any
way, the Hawks hoisted the
Cup following their 1-0 dou
ble-overtime victory over the
Detroit Red Wings in Game
four.".
April 11th:
On this day in 1907, Roger
Bresnahan changed the cul
ture of major league baseball
by becoming the first catcher
to wear shin guards during a
game. He sported the gear for
the first time as a member of
the New York Giants. Bresna
han suited up for five different
clubs over 17 seasons, batted
for a 0.279 average, hit 26
homers and racked up 530
RBIs. He helped the Giants
win a World Series title in
1905 and was inducted into
the Baseball Hall of Fame in
1945.
April 12th:
On this day in 1938, the
Chicago Blackhawks made
NHL history by becoming the
first team to win the Stanley
Cup after posting a losing
record during the regular sea
son. Chicago got hot during
the playoffs, losing only three
games en route to the title.
The Blackhawks got the
clinching victory by defeating
the Toronto Maple Leafs, 4-1,
in Game four. Four different
Chicago players found the net,
including center, Carl Voss,
who scored what proved to be
the game-winner at the 16:45
mark of the second period.
Voss’ goal was also the first of
three unanswered for the
Hawks in their burial of
Toronto.
April 13th:
On this day in 1933, the
New York Rangers captured
the Stanley Cup following a 1-
0 overtime victory over the
Toronto Maple Leafs in Game
four. The hero was right
winger, Bill Cook, who be
came the first player to score
a Cup-winning goal in sudden
death. Cook found the net dur
ing a power play situation at
the 7:33 mark, crowning the
Rangers champions.
April 14th:
On this day in 1931, Joe
McCarthy managed his first
game with the New York Yan
kees and the result was a 6-3
victory over the Boston Red
Sox. Babe Ruth went two for
three with a solo shot in the
bottom of the seventh. Earle
Combs had a pair of RBI-sin-
gles and Red Ruffing logged
seven strikeouts to earn the
complete-game win. Mc
Carthy led the Yanks to seven
World Series titles, including
four in a row from 1936 until
1939. He was inducted into
the Baseball Hall of Fame in
1957 and became a Monu
ment Park nominee in 1976.
April 15th:
On this day in 1952, the
Detroit Red Wings claimed
the Stanley Cup following
their four-game sweep of the
Montreal Canadiens. Detroit
won the clincher, 3-0, as cen
ter, Metro Prystai, scored
twice, with one of his goals
coming on a power play sce
nario at the 6:50 mark of the
first period. The Red Wings
became the first team in NHL
history to go perfect through
out an entire postseason.
Meanwhile, the Canadiens
lost consecutive times in the
Stanley Cup Finals for the
first time ever. This was also
the only time Montreal expe
rienced a championship series
sweep.
April 16th:
On this day in 1929, the
New York Yankees became
the first team in major league
baseball history to sport num
bers on the back of their uni
forms. In today’s era of
professional sports, players
have the option of choosing
their own numbers unless
they’re worn by somebody
else or retired by an organiza
tion. This wasn’t the case for
the Yankees, who wore the nu
merals that mirrored their po
sitions in the batting order. For
example, Earle Combs, New
York’s starting center fielder
and leadoff man, wore number
one.
