The lost Kyanite mine of Bent Tree
By Chris Feldt
Progress Contributor
Everyone knows that
Pickens County is known for
its marble deposits. Few peo
ple know that it once was
known for its massive kyan
ite deposits.
Kyanite is a mineral found
in pegmatites. It is found in
several parts of Georgia, to
include the Appalachian
Mountains and Graves
Mountain.
Most kyanite crystals are
dark blue in color and share
the same Greek root of the
color cyan. Kyanite pos
sesses unique properties es
pecially when mixed with
ceramics and other materials.
Kyanite can withstand very
high temperatures and has
been used in the molds of
foundries for making high-
temperature metals, the ce
ramics of spark plugs and the
tiles that provide the heat
shielding on the space shut
tle.
Back in 1945, Pickens
County became known for its
kyanite deposits. An article
from the Pickens County
Progress, dated June 25,
1945, was titled New Mineral
Reported Found in Pickens
County.
The article goes on to
mention that deposits of mas
sive kyanite were found in
Pickens County. Old mining
records also show that there
was a kyanite mine named
the Hendrix mine located
within the land that is now
Bent Tree. They specifically
state the mine was located
halfway between Hendrix
and Sharp Top mountains.
NOTE: Kyanite mines are
above-ground and not in tun
nels.
In 1945 state geologists
A.S.Furcron and K.H.
Teague produced a papers on
Sillimanite and Massive
Kyanite In Georgia. It was

it is believed the deposits have been exhausted.

mines were. They were marked originally with Xs.

Up until the late 1930s, kyanite was only thought to have been found in India. The ge
ologists who first discovered and wrote about the massive kyanite deposits found in Pickens
County also were interested in the quarry (referred to as the Oglethorpe formation - for
the area, not the specific mountain) in their paper found near Burnt Mountain. The same
quarry was the source of the roads of the Tate Mountain Estates. The wife of one of the
geologists is shown with the boulders of massive kyanite seen here. NOTE: The boulders
aren't massive, the kyanite is referred to as massive kyanite.
they who discovered massive
kyanite deposits in Pickens
County (in particular north
eastern Pickens County near
Sharp Top, Burnt Mountain
and Mt. Oglethorpe)
In their paper, the
Oglethorpe formation of
granite is mentioned.
By the location presented
in Furcron’s paper, the map
and the description of a long-
defunct above-ground kyan
ite mine, I would
approximate the kyanite field
near Crippled Oak around the
14th and 15th holes of the
gated community’s golf
course.
As with the Graves Moun
tain quarry, which at one time
produced up to half of Amer
ica’s mined kyanite and pro
vided many of the minerals
to make the space shuttle heat
shielding, it appears that the
kyanite resources located in
Pickens were largely used up.
By comparison, it only
took a little over 20 years to
deplete all the kyanite at
Graves Mountain.
As of today, I have found
no present kyanite boulders
within Bent Tree. However,
some may exist. I am not a
geologist.
