Election information for upcoming primary
Pioneer Road for pre-election business; Early voting at community center

There are several key
points voters need to know
regarding the upcoming May
24th General Primary. First
of which is the elections of
fice is still in the Pioneer
Road location where it has
been for the past several
years.
There are plans for elec
tions workers to move to
space in the building on
Camp Road that houses the
Ga. State Patrol Post. How
ever, the move will not occur
until after the primary. Ac
cording to local officials,
quite a few people have mis
takenly gone to the GSP Post
looking for an election office.
Thus far only some rough
renovation work has been
completed on the portion of
the building that will house
the election office. The GSP
will continue to use a portion
of the building as well. Be
sides moving furniture, the
relocation requires special
provisions to make sure all
sensitive material is safe
guarded by both the office’s
local security company and
secretary of state personnel.
Election Office Supervi
sor Stacey Godfrey said, “We
definitely can’t [move] in
middle of an election. Hope
fully by July or August;
we’re shooting for August.
There is a lot more that goes
into it than just moving of
fice. The Secretary of State
has to send someone to move
the computer system. And
our security company has to
be set up for transition.”
So, for the May 24th elec
tion, voters need to remem
ber, all pre-election business,
registration, requesting ab
sentee ballots, checking on
registration status will be
handled at the Pioneer Road
office. The deadline to regis
ter is April 25th.
Godfrey said it is impor
tant to note that recent legis
lation requires anyone who
wants an absentee ballot sent
to them, contact their office
every year. Request absentee
ballot applications online at
secretary of state’s website
(Google secretary of state,
Georgia). Applications are
also available at the Pioneer
Road office. Anyone who has
questions on absentee ballots
should contact the Pioneer
Road office at Phone: (706)
253-8781.
Advanced in-person vot
ing starts May 2 for the May
24th General Primary and
Non-partisan vote. All ad
vanced voting is at the com
munity center in Roper Park
where it has been for the past
several elections.
Voters may want to re
member that the county com
mission seats for both east
and west Pickens are up for
grabs. Voters only see the
candidates for the district in
which they live; these races
are not county wide. And to
make this a little more con
fusing, the west end seat
election is a regular election
and all candidates qualified
in the Republican party pri
mary. So only west end GOP
voters in the primary will see
the commission candidates.
For the special election to
fill the unexpired term in the
east side of the county, is
technically a non-partisan
race, so all voters, regardless
of party, will see the commis
sion race on their ballot.
Elections Supervisor God
frey said the ballots can be a
little confusing as there are
potentially six different bal
lots that could be seen in
Pickens with divisions by
east and west side; political
party and non-partisan.
Godfrey said there are
also ballot question sections
with both parties and their of
fice will work with the
Progress to present sample
ballot ahead of early voting
to speed up time at the polls.
Anyone who wants a look
at their specifics can go to the

tary of State website. Google

By Nan Nawrocki
Our next play, The Ceme

is a dramedy about three
Jewish widows who meet
once a month for tea before
going to visit their husbands'
graves. They're old friends
and are living in a comfort
able routine. Ida is sweet
tempered and loves to bake
cookies.
However, she thinks she is
ready to begin a new life after
her husband's death three
years earlier. Lucille is a
feisty woman who just wants
to have fun and flirt with the
nearest guy, for reasons that
become clear during the play.
Doris a widow for four years,
is priggish and judgmental,
She does not like change.
Sam, the local butcher
shop owner, runs into the
widows in the cemetery
while he is visiting his wife's
grave on their 40th Anniver
sary. When Sam later shows
up at Ida's house with a deliv
