To the Editor:
There are good people
still!
With so many bad things
going on now I want to tell
everyone something good.
My granddaughter called
me late Sunday night and
asked me to go get her some
diapers and wipes for her lit
tle boy. After a sermon I said
OK. On my way to Walmart
I remembered I only had
$24.1 prayed all the way to
find a small pack. When I
got there only large boxes
were there. But wait, on the
top shelf were three small
$10 packs. I climbed up but
could not reach them. In a
few minutes a teenage boy
came by. I asked for help. I
thanked him and told him I
could not pay for a big box.
I grabbed the buggy and ran
to self check-out. As I
started to reach for them, a
young woman said, ‘‘Let me
help you.” I told her I could
do it but she grabbed them
and scanned it. She then put
her card in and paid for
them. She said she had just
come from a women’s meet
ing in Florida and some
thing told her I needed help.
I began to cry and she told
me her name and she lived
in Gilmer County. She asked
me to come over to a desk
and opened her hand and
gave me a handful of $20
bills. I looked down and
then up and she was gone.
I gave the $100 to my
granddaughter and told her
to get down on her knees
and thank God that night.
Britt said the money would
fill the car up with gas and
get an oil change done.
I am going to try to do
someone else something
good a little later. If every
one would help someone a
little we would all smile.
Thank you God.

Academic Advantages of
Dual Enrollment
In last week's Pickens
Progress dual enrollment
was reported to have domi
nated the school board
meeting. The school board
meets every Thursday to ad
dress issues within the edu
cation systems in Pickens.
This week they congratu
lated many BOE members
because of School Board
Appreciation Week. During
this meeting, they addressed
the benefits students may re
ceive from dual enrolling
during high school.
Pickens Fligh School
College and Career Coach
Daniel Bell gave a presenta
tion on the school system’s
dual enrollment program. A
dual enrollment program al
lows students to receive a
high school diploma while
getting a head start on their
secondary education. The
program has grown expo
nentially as students have
realized the advantages of
starting their college educa
tion early. This program al
lows students to experience
a college education and gain
credits while preparing for
their future career. I think it
is very important to educate
people about this option as it
provides a way to get a head
start at being qualified for
their jobs.
I, and multiple other peo
ple I know are planning to
use the dual enrollment pro
gram at Pickens Fligh
School. There are multiple
colleges to choose from
when planning your dual en
rollment. I am planning on
dual enrolling a few of my
english classes to get college
credits while maintaining
my academic standing at the
high school. Many classes
are taught at Chattahoochee
Technical College that may
assist in a student’s aca
demic journey. Many people
may dual enroll to learn a
trade such as welding. These
people may spend a very
short amount of time in col
lege and make lots of money
in the future.
Overall, dual enrollment
is a great option for many
Pickens Fligh School stu
dents. People should take
advantage of this opportu
nity they are provided.

To the Editor:
What are people supposed
to do for free in this
county?
I agree that there are not
enough things available for
families to do locally. Most
of the things that are avail
able are geared towards
adults, and close way too
early. In this time of gas
prices rising, we need to
start evaluating the needs of
the community. There need
to be more events that are
appropriate for all ages and
families. There needs to be
more than taking kids to the
park and sitting in a parking
lot for fun. Already, even
without the price incentive,
there is almost nothing to do
for fun or entertainment in
Pickens County. Most areas
are closed after 6, including
our Main Street which is
supposed to be one of the
most social places in the
county. Nothing like a golf
course, a bowling alley, or a
skating rink exists in close
enough distance.
[Editor] Dan Pool is
right, even the simple act of
sprucing up our parks and
better community projects
would be immensely benefi
cial. It would be nice, as a
teenager, for there to be an
area where we are allowed
to go. Giving them an area
where they can socialize
outside of school that isn’t
an hour away or so would
make things much easier.
The fact that we have so
many places to drink and are
only really enjoyed by
adults is alienating the
growing population of fam
ilies with a younger genera
tion. This county cannot
survive without including
the younger generation.
