NATIONAL
DAY OF
PRAYER
This special event will take
place in front of the Pickens
Courthouse in Jasper at noon
on Thursday, May the 5th.
Everyone is invited to at
tend. This nondenomina-
tional prayer service is for
everyone who desires right
eousness to be restored in our
nation. We live in dangerous
times. As a nation, we have
forgotten God and the conse
quences of this will be severe
if we don’t repent. It’s time to
turn things around and prayer
is the first step.
It is our sincere hope that
this time spent in prayer will
begin the desperately needed
restoration of righteousness
in our country. Remember,
the first great awakening took
place on July 8, 1741. The
preacher, Jonathan Edwards
presented a now famous ser
mon, “Sinners in the hands of
an angry God.”
Edwards never finished
his sermon. The people were
so convicted of their sin that
their crying and weeping was
so loud it forced Edwards to
discontinue his sermon. But,
that day, a nationwide revival
began to burn across Amer
ica. So, just think, the next
great awakening can begin in
Pickens County on May 5th.
It’s time to reconstruct our
crumbling biblical founda
tions. Psalm 11:3, warns us,
“If the foundations are de
stroyed, what can the right
eous do?” We can begin by
praying.
We ask that everyone who
reads this share it with their
respective churches and
friends and encourage them
to attend. Various pastors and
volunteers of our community
will lead prayers for our
country, military and law en
forcement personnel, health
workers, churches and min
istries, and other critical top
ics.
We hope to see you on
May 5th.
Minister ’s
Corner
Share laughter
with others
By Rev.
Preston
Jones
Pastor
Jasper First
Baptist
After a long, dry ser
mon, the minister an
nounced that he wished
to meet with the church
board following the close
of the service. The first
man to arrive and greet
the minister was a total
stranger. "You misunder
stood my announcement.
This is a meeting of the
board members," ex
plained the minister. "I
know," said the man,
"but if there is anyone
here more bored than I
am, then I'd like to meet
him."
Many of us love to tell
or listen to jokes. I imag
ine if I sat down with you
and asked you to share
your favorite jokes, we
may find ourselves laugh
ing as you told the jokes
to me. There is something
about laughter that is an
essential part of being
human.
How much is laughter
a part of your life? I read
a 2020 study that suggests
that healthy children may
laugh as much as 400
times per day, but adults
tend to laugh only 15
times per day. Why do we

Habits
“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. ’’James 4:10 JVIV
Habits can be good or bad. The wonderful thing about good
habits is that they allow us to live well with less effort and not have
to struggle or think too much about the right thing to do. Bad habits,
on the other hand, can make it nearly impossible to do the right
thing without a strong will to counterbalance the pull of the bad
habit. And what is even worse about bad habits is that they often
become part of our character. That is why Aristotle advised incul
cating good habits from youth onward. It makes living a good life
easier.
Those of us who are honest enough to recognize that we have
some bad habits that have crystallized into character defects should
consider reforming our life in a radical way, or quite literally, self
overcoming. The first thing necessary is the desire and motivation
to change, followed by a persistent effort to do the right thing, espe
cially in the early days, weeks, and months of change. Trivial
changes like dietary changes can often be changed in three or four
weeks. More serious changes, such as ingrained attitudes like pes
simism or stinginess may take years of work to overcome.
Finally, we should ask God for help with this, realizing that we
may not have the strength to do it on our own. Many alcoholics have
testified to the fact that they were helpless on their own, but after
getting on their knees and praying to be delivered from the desire
to drink, the desire to drink finally left them. — Christopher Simon
