Children invited to fish May 7

A scene from the Fishing Rodeo in 2017. This year, due to work at the site, the Pickens
Sportsman Club will only host the kids fishing day. It will be held on May 7.

Spring is in the air! The
weather is warming up, the
birds are singing, the sun is
shining, it's time to go fish
ing.
After two years of the
pandemic shutting us down,
the Pickens County Sports
man’s Club will be holding
our annual fishing rodeo
again this year. The commu
nity event will be held Sat
urday May 7 from 9 a.m. to
2 p.m. at Long Swamp
Creek on Cove Rd in
Jasper. (Cove Creek as
most call it).
In previous years this has
been a multi-day event offer
ing an outing to special needs
children and adults, assisted
living homes, and then the
children of the community.
Due to the ongoing work
happening at the event site,
we will be limited on our set
up and ability to hold a multi
day event for the assisted liv
ing and special needs
members who require wheel
chairs and special access. It is
unfortunate that we cannot
provide those groups their
deserved days this year, but it
is the card we've been dealt
and we are working to make
sure we able to accommodate
those groups next year.
With that being said we
will be holding a single day
event for children ages 15
and under. No fishing license
required for children. As per
Georgia fishing regulations
you will be permitted to keep
eight trout per child fishing if
you choose to do so. You will
need to bring your own fish
ing gear. There will be event
staff on site to help guide you
on what bait and tackle to
use. Adults are allowed to
fish after 2 p.m. but are re
quired to abide by Georgia
state fishing regulations. A
fishing license and trout
stamp are required for adults
to fish after the event. I look
forward to seeing everyone
on the riverbanks.

Submitted by Pickens
County 4-H
On April 20, Pickens
County 4-Hers, their fami
lies, and honored guests gath
ered at the 4-H office for a
pinning ceremony and schol
arship presentation.
The ceremony began with
Agent Justin Fellenbaum
welcoming the families and
recognizing special guests.
Fourth grader Sophie Mor
gan stood before the crowd
as she spoke of the freedom
we have in this county to be
a part of organizations like 4-
H which was followed by the
Pledge of Allegiance led by
Senior 4-Her Molly Hooker.
Before the pinning could
officially begin, those 4-Hers
who had completed their cer
tified teen leader training
were presented with their
badges. After receiving ex
tensive leadership training,
certified teen leaders are
called upon to teach work
shops at local 4-H events like
county council and summer
day camps, as well as district
events like Cloverleaf Con
ference.
They are also needed to
assist with younger 4-Hers as
they prepare for competitions
and while on trips such as
district competition and re
ward trips. The 4-Hers who
completed that training were
Reese Davis, Sarahi Flores,
Sheila Flores, Molly Hooker,
Ryan Johnson, Dylan Lo,
Micah Newton and Sophia
Scott.
After badges had been
given to everyone, it was
time recognizing 4-hers who
participated in the different
events during this school
year. The first group that was
recognized was those who
had competed in Consumer
Judging back in the fall. This
competition is made up of
two competition areas: Judg
ing classes and Commercials.
In the judging classes, 4-hers
have to compare items or
services and decide which is
best according to an accom
panying situation statement.
The statement describes a
consumer and gives the
needs to be considered when
he/she makes a decision to
purchase the item. Factors
influencing these needs may
include the person’s age, gen
der, available money,
lifestyle, school or job status
and any other requirements.
This is where 4-Hers gain
skills in making rational de
cisions when purchasing
goods and services while
maximizing resources. 4-
Hers were also asked to learn
about cotton as an agricul
tural commodity in our state
