your friend is passive-aggres
sive when you find success,
you may be dealing with an
overly competitive friend
who is unable to be happy for
you.
Have conversations
geared towards letting your
child identify personality
traits in their friend that may
be contributing to negative
behaviors. Discuss in general
what makes for a good friend
and what does not.
You can help them under
stand the qualities and traits
of a good friend. A true friend
is one who is: trustworthy,
honest, dependable, loyal to
people they care about, a
good listener, supportive,
non-judgmental, and more.
These traits should serve as a
guide for your child to not
only identify a good friend,
but better understand how
they can be a good friend to
others.
It’s not uncommon for
kids to get stuck in a bad
friendship. If you’re starting
to feel as though your child’s
friendship is becoming nega
tive or is damaging their
mental health, you should sit
down with your child to talk
about it.
There may even come a
time when you will have to
help your child “break up”
with a toxic friend but hope
fully, these identifiers and
your discussions will avoid
that. Depending on their age
and stage of development,
this will begin to help them
avoid toxic relationships in
the future.

Problematic
friendships
Friends are an important
part of life, especially for our
children. They make life bet
ter by providing social and
emotional support, providing
companionship, and lifting
their mood. Over their life
time, maintaining positive
friendships can lead to im
proved health and well
being.
However, not all friend
ships are good ones destined
to be healthy. Some are toxic
and stressful. A bad friend
can be many things, but, typ
ically, they lead to mental and
emotional fatigue or a lack of
general well-being. Research
shows that negative or overly
aggressive social interactions
can lead to increased inflam
mation within the body.
So how can parents help
their kids develop healthy re
lationships and avoid the
toxic ones? The first step is to
help them leam to identify a
bad friend.
In short, a bad friend is
someone who is stressful or
exhausting to be around.
They may be:
• Overly competitive with
you
• Likely to encourage bad
behaviors
• Unreliable
• Combative (like to start
fights)
• Rude
• Mean or degrading
(make you feel bad)
• Prone to gossip
• Likely to bully you or
others
Parents can help their chil
dren discover if a friend of
theirs does not have their best
interests at heart. Here are
some types of friends to look
out for.
The Selfish
This friend may only
make plans when it is benefi
cial to them — or only when
they are feeling lonely and
bored. They may also seek
constant attention or ask for
unreasonable favors. Other
wise, they are unavailable or
unreliable when you need
them most. This friendship
may feel largely one-sided or
disappointing.
The Overly Critical
This friend may degrade
you intentionally or uninten
tionally. If they share your
personal stories or make
derogatory comments (such
as put downs) behind your
back, you may have an
overly critical friend who
lacks a healthy filter.
The Overstepping
This friend may have
good intentions but lacks
boundaries. An overstepping
friend may insert themselves
into conversations or issues
with you and your partner,
family, or other friends with
out being asked or initially
included.
The Victim
A common form of bad
friend is the victim. While
friends will need help from
time to time, this person may
have an unhealthy need for
attention or sympathy from
others. They may drain your
capacity for compassion.
The Competitive
Competition can be
healthy, but if you find that
