Sassafras
writers group
meet May 19
Submitted by Sassafras
Literary Exchange
After being enthralled by
last month's guest speaker,
Chris Feldt, The Sassafras
Literary Exchange will drift
back into its usual meeting
routine. That being the shar
ing of stories and swappin'
lies. Yes, we have writers of
fiction, along with poetry and
some non-fiction that some
times sounds like lies.
Sassafras will meet at 6:30
p.m., Thursday, May 19 at
the Southern Appalachian
Folk School, 68 D.B. Carroll
Street. It doesn't take a GPS
or an executive from the Jet
Propulsion Laboratory to
find us. Just turn on the street
that goes past the Old Jail and
look for the white building at
the end of the next block.
Sassafras is a local writing
group that has been around
for over 40 years. Its purpose
is to promote good writing in
the youth and adults in our
area. Part of that process is
reflected in the Creative
Writing for Youth contest we
put on each year. We have
conducted adult writing con
test, also. At our meetings
we usually share a sample of
of our own writing. While
most of us are not profes
sional writers, some interest
ing topics and views can be
covered.

From My Desk to Your Home
Greetings!
Wow. It’s hard to believe we are almost halfway through 2022. May is al
ways a whirlwind month, with high school and college graduations, closing
out the school year and preparing for summer. And let’s not forget
Mother’s Day...I hope everyone enjoyed a nice, relaxing day with those
you love.
May is also American Stroke Month and a perfect time to educate our
community about signs and symptoms of stroke. Have you ever consid
ered that even if you’re not a healthcare professional, you have the ability
to save a life? If you or a loved one were in an emergency situation, would
you know how to recognize what’s happening and respond?
Recognizing signs and symptoms of stroke is fairly simple and remem
bering the acronym “BE FAST” can help you identify and take quick ac
tion:
Balance - watch for dizziness or loss of balance
Eyes - check for vision loss or double vision
Face - look for an uneven smile
Arm - check if one arm is weak
Speech - listen for slurred speech
Time - call 91 I at the first sign
Following the “BE FAST” protocol could save your life or the life of some
one else. I encourage you to make a mental note of this information and
also share with your loved ones.
According to the American Stroke Association, stroke is the #5 killer and
a leading cause of disability in the U.S. Every 40 seconds someone in the
U.S. has a stroke.Additionally, 99% of U.S. adults have at least one of seven
cardiovascular health risks.
While we can’t control our family history or certain diagnoses like heart
disease, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, or previous stroke or mini stroke/TIA,
there are risk factors associated with stroke that can be controlled, such
as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity and not being
active.
I know changing habits and lifestyle choices is not easy. I recommend set
ting small, attainable goals. For example, choose smaller portion sizes for
your plate, eat more veggies, walk for 30 minutes 3 times per week and,
if you smoke, enroll in a smoking cessation program. The Georgia De
partment of Public Health offers the Ready to Quit program that includes
counseling services, community resource referrals, nicotine replacement
therapies, and is open 24 hours per day, seven days per week (including
holidays). Call (877) 270-STOP (7867) for more information.
Let’s all do our part in making our community a healthy one and strike
out stroke!
Always,
Denise Ray,
President and Chief Executive Officer
