Over 500 build memories at 2022 Fishing Rodeo

“I got a fish; I got a fish,”
shouted a little fisherman as
his dad took one of 2,200
stocked trout off his hook at
the Sportman’s Club Fish
Rodeo. The Fishing Rodeo”
was held last Saturday for
ages 15 and under at Long
Swamp Creek on Cove Road.
The first Sportsman’s Fish
ing Rodeo was held in 1987
in the pasture of Pendley
Creek Stables on Cove Road.
Danny Cruikshank, one of
the original helpers said,
“Janie Whitfield of the Bar

starting the family event. In
those days clients from the
Burnt Mountain Center came
on Thursday, older adults in
cluding nursing homes fished
Friday and as today children
under age 15 finished on Sat

nered with Sacketts to cook
and furnish 600 hot dogs for
the day.

Sportsman’s Club mem
bers were on hand to help
give directions under the
leadership of Rodeo Chair
Trevor Wells.

The Pickens County
Retired Educators Associ
ation (PCREA) held its
April meeting with a
record number of attendees
since pre-Covid days. The
meeting included recogniz
ing Pickens High School’s
Valedictorian, Piper Dun
can and Salutatorian, Will
Jent.
Piper plans to attend
UGA this fall as part of
their Foundation Fellowship.
She plans to major in Interna
tional Affairs and Anthropol
ogy; she plans to attend law
school after she completes
her undergraduate studies.
Will plans to attend Ken-
nesaw State University in the
fall, and subsequently pursue
a degree in engineering at GA
Tech.
Joli Anderson was pre
sented the annual scholarship
from PCREA. There were
several worthy applicants
and Joli was chosen from
those applicants. She was
presented with $1,000 to
wards her college expenses.
Joli plans to attend Kenne-
saw State University and be
come a high school
chemistry or biology teacher.
Ellison Steinhauer earned the
highest grade point average
at Pickens Junior High
School and was unable to at
tend the meeting. Kudos to
these wonderfid Pickens
County students.

cers for the 2022-2023 year,
and hear from Sheriff Donnie
Craig and D.J. Barker from
Hennsler Financial. If you
