Cloverleaf 4-Hers get wild at the Atlanta Zoo
Pickens County Cloverleaf 4-Flers
really showed out at their district com
petition, and they earned a reward trip
as a result. But what kind of trip could
you take that would keep the attention
of both boys and girls in grades 4-6?
What do all kids love? Animals. The
logical choice was then to take the
group to the Atlanta Zoo.
On April 20th, Pickens County Ex
tension Agent Justin Fellenbaum along
with Volunteer Leader Traci Bucking
ham, certified Teen Leader Molly
Flooker, and Parents Elivia Towers and
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Morgan braved the
thousands of people who descended on
the Atlanta Zoo in hopes of making this
reward trip one that the 4-Hers would
remember.
4-Hers enjoyed going to each of the
exhibits from the lions, flamingos, apes,
snakes, rhinos, giraffes, and pandas.
The 4-Hers even got a hands-on close
encounter with the giraffe as they were
allowed to help the zookeeper feed one
of her favorite giraffes. It must have
worked because after the last child fed
the giraffe, he yawned, turned around,
and went to take a nap. All along the
way, they learned about the similarities
and differences between plants, ani
mals, and habitats. Through each expe
rience they would talk to each other
about what they were noticing and as a
result they were becoming a more
close-knit group.
Needing to escape the craziness of
the zoo before gridlock traffic of Atlanta
got too bad, 4-Hers were convinced to
eat off location. What better way to con
tinue the fun of the day than end it with
Hibachi. The 4-Hers jumped as the
chef’s fire exploded in the air and his
knife skills mesmerized even the most
easily distracted child. They left the
restaurant with full stomachs and great
memories. Another amazing day with
Pickens County 4-H was in the books.
