KPB President
Pickens County has many
people, groups, clubs, and
businesses helping to make
our community great, and
Keep Pickens Beautiful is
appreciative of the collective
effect of these efforts. KPB’s
Green Ribbon and Green
Thumb Awards recognize
outstanding examples of pro
grams, projects, or activities
that protect or enhance our
environment.
The Green Ribbon is usu
ally awarded to a business
for their beautification ef
forts and environmental
stewardship. For May/June
2022, KPB has awarded the
Green Ribbon to Pickens
County east side recycling
and waste management.
Keep Pickens Beautiful
thanks the east side recycling
team for assisting the com
munity in effectively recy
cling to reduce the waste
headed for the landfills, and
for beautifying the recycling
center with their vegetable
garden. KPB is honored to
award them the Green Rib
bon for May/June 2022.
In addition to their helpful
recycling team and their
beautiful vegetable garden
(be sure to check out their
tomatoes, peppers, and other
veggies), the east side recy
cling center is a busy place.
The center currently collects
roughly 20 percent of the
county’s recycling.
Recently, Big Canoe resi
dents started using the east
side center as their primary
recycling facility. The team
there is helping to educate
the Big Canoe community on
the different sorting
processes the county has
adopted to improve the effec
tiveness of their recycling
program.
The sorting at the Pickens
recycling centers has re
duced contaminants, ensur
ing that the materials are not
ending up in a landfill, but
are truly getting recycled into
new products. The east side
recycling center is excited
about working with the Big
Canoe community.

a future Green Award, or if
you would like to help, con

ens County since 1989
through various projects and
initiatives with an emphasis
on recycling, beautification,
and education.

All they need is rain
After almost two years of con
troversy, court orders and the threat of
complete draining, work on Grand
view Dam is complete and the lake is
on the way to being full once again.
Work on several areas of the dam was
completed earlier this month and the valve which had re
mained open to keep the lake level lower was shut last
Tuesday. Mark Miller, a spokesman for the privately owned
lake association, said if we keep getting rain, the lake will
be back to its pre-draining level in about three weeks. The
controversy over the dam began when cracks near the crest
of the earthen dam were spotted and the state ordered the
lake lowered for safety.

y CJ Grand jury names court house
* building committee
The Pickens County Court was
in session this week. This was the term
due to convene in April, but due to the
destruction of the courthouse by fire,
it was postponed until June so the
school house could be used without interfering with the ses
sions of the school.
The grand jury convened Monday, and after hearing an
able charge from Judge Hawkins, elected A.C. Moore fore
man and R.L. Chambers clerk. Among other things they
appointed a building committee to cooperate with the
county commissioner of roads and revenues, H.G. Jones,
in the construction of a new court house.
