The call was originally

TAPS was a tool with
out much heart until Gen

notes in July of 1862. He
felt what was being
played was “to formal” to
end the day and wanted
something more soothing.
Although he could not
read music he had the
notes in his head and he
summoned his bugler to
write the notes and put
them on paper. The re

On Forming
Good Habits
“Have nothing to do with godless
myths and old wives’ tales; rather;
train yourself to be godly. For physical
training is of some value, but
godliness has value for all things,
holding promisefor both the present
life and the life to come. ”
1 Timothy 4:7-8
T here is not much to improve
on in Aristotle’s treatment
of habits and how to
develop a virtuous character.
Aristotle said that we become
virtuous by acting virtuously over
long periods of time, and this
creates a fixed disposition to act
virtuously. Thus, it is important to
develop good habits in our youth.
The Stoic philosopher Epictetus put
it this way: “Generally then, if you
want to make something a habit,
practice it; and if you do not want
to make it a habit, do not do it, but
get in the habit of doing something
else. It is the same in relation to
things of the mind.’’This may seem
obvious, but then why do we have
bad habits? Because we keep doing
the things we wish we could stop
doing and we keep thinking the
thoughts we wish we could stop
thinking. It requires effort to
IftH Au faS

change our habits, and even more
so when they are longstanding. For
example, suppose that we are in the
habit of letting our minds wander
when listening to others and we
want to become a better listener.
Two things that might help us here
are to not interrupt the person
speaking and to not multi-task
while listening. Many of us have
developed bad habits with our
phones or with social media that
cause us to disregard the people
who are standing in front of us in
favor of the text message or post
from someone we barely know.
Consider working on changing one
bad habit every month.
