Minister’s Comer
well received other buglers
wanted the notes ... the new
version was put into practice
without an official order from
the Army.
The first use of TAPS in a
funeral, according to Air
Force historian Master Ser
geant Jari Villanueva, also,
came in 1862 when an officer
asked for the bugle call in
stead of a three gun volley
which might have started a
new battle.
It seems as if humankind
searches for emotional han
dles or some way to better
understand and be comforted
in life. General Butterfield
was inspired to put a bugle
call in place to help influence
rest at the end of the day.
The first TAPS funeral
was a symbol of respect for a
life of service and deserved
some type of recognition for
the soldier and inspiration for
his buddies.
There are no official texts
for TAPS but several have
been written. This is my fa
vorite and might help us with
a handle on how we see and
experience life as followers
of Jesus Christ even in death:
“Thanks and praise, For
our Days,
Neath the sun, Neath the
Stars,
Neath the sky,
As we go, This we know,
God is nigh”
Reverend Caylor is a retired
United Methodist Minister.

Racing Report — Coca Cola 600
overtime. Everyone pitted
with the front guys taking 2
tires and other guys farther
behind like Austin Dillon tak
ing 4. On the restart, Dillon
got beside Larson for the lead
in turns 3 and 4 thanks to the
4 fresh tires but caused an
other big wreck when he
came up front of Larson’s
bumper coming to the white
flag. Hamlin was now the
leader and held off his team
mate Kyle Busch on the last
restart to win the 2022 Coca-
Cola 600.
Overall, this was an awe
some race, and over five
hours long. Many battles for
position, some lead changes,
multiple leaders, many cau
tions and many interesting
ones, multiple grooves to run
again, and a very exciting
and memorable end to the
race. Definitely one of the
best races of the year so far.
Next week, the Cup series
heads to a brand new track
for the Cup drivers, World

in St. Louis, Missouri. Since
it’s a new track, it’s a big
question right now if the race
will be good but we will see.

Art project leads to funds raised for Ukraine
Big Canoe residents create group mural
Volunteers in Big Canoe
worked quickly under the su
pervision of artist John
Feight to complete the major
ity of work on two large mu
rals that will hang in the
Wellness Center of the gated
community. The murals will
appear as windows looking
onto the wooded landscape
and is being done to mark
Big Canoe’s 50th anniver
sary.
The painting is now back
in my studio for a little touch-
up, Feight said by e-mail. “A
few more animals will be
added. The painting is titled
The Big Canoe Greeting
Committee. It will hang at
the Wellness Center entrance
beginning sometime in Au
gust.”
The artist, who also the
founder of the Foundation for
Hospital Art, said more than
100 people came by and par
ticipated in the one day paint
ing session at the Wellness
Center.
“It’s was a great re
sponse,” he said. “We did in
one day what I thought
would take three.”
Feight, who has overseen
similar projects through his
hospital art foundation, said
there were some artists in the
group and some who may
have discovered that day they
have an interest in art, but
most were pure volunteers.
“We need people to partici
pate more than create,” in
this type of project, he said.
Ukraine Projects
While painting the murals,
Feight also encouraged peo
ple to paint on a Ukraine
Peace Dove work that will be
presented to a Ukraine hospi
tal when the war ends, with
Feight accepting UNICEF
donations of those painting.
He said $450 was raised for
UNICEF efforts in Ukraine.
I just can’t stand the war.
It’s just terrible. I don’t want
to sit in the corner and do
nothing, like a potted plant,”
the artist said.

May 29-June 4
May 29th:
On this day in 1980, Larry Bird won the
NBA’s Rookie of the Year award, beating out
longtime rival, Magic Johnson, in the
process. Bird completed the 1979-80 cam
paign with averages of 21. 3 points, 10.4 re
bounds and 4.5 assists. He also made his first
of 12 All-Star appearances while earning an
All-NBA First Team selection. Bird even
took the Celtics from 29 victories in 1979 to
61 wins and an Atlantic Division crown in
1980.
May 30th:
On this day in 1894, Boston Beaneaters
second baseman, Bobby Lowe, became the
first player to hit four home runs in a major
league game. This took place in the second
contest of a doubleheader between the Eaters
and Cincinnati Reds, which Boston won, 20-
11.
May 31st:
On this day in 1937, the Brooklyn
Dodgers extinguished Carl Hubbell’s major
league record 24-game winning streak during
the opening encounter of a doubleheader with
the New York Giants. Brooklyn’s offense
went after the New York ace, who lasted just
three and one-thirds innings. Hubbell surren
dered seven hits, five runs and three walks
while managing one strikeout. This fast start
enabled the Dodgers to coast to a 10-3 vic
tory.
June 1st:
On this day in 1937, Bill Dietrich threw
the 10th no-hitter in Chicago White Sox fran
chise history. Dietrich faced 29 batters, al
lowed two baserunners and recorded five
strikeouts as the Sox blanked the St. Louis
Browns, 8-0. He also scored a run in the
fourth inning.
June 2nd:
On this day in 1935, the baseball world
witnessed the culmination of one of the great
est careers in major league history as Babe
Ruth announced his retirement. Ruth left the
game three days after making his final ap
pearance with the Boston Braves. He was in
ducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame a year
later.
June 3rd:
On this day in 1918, Dutch Leonard be
came the first pitcher to toss two no-hitters in
a Boston Red Sox uniform. Leonard’s first
no-no came on August 30, 1916, in a 4-0
shutout of the St. Louis Browns. Number two
came during a 5-0 blanking of the Detroit
Tigers, where he faced 28 batters, allowed
one baserunner and logged four strikeouts.
June 4th:
On this day in 1958, San Francisco Giants
left fielder, Hank Sauer, and catcher, Bob
Schmidt, became the first pair of teammates
to hit consecutive pinch hit home runs in a
National League game. Both homers took
place against the Milwaukee Braves and each
player hit a solo shot with two outs in the bot
tom of the 10th. Schmidt’s blast tied the
score, but Milwaukee prevailed, 10-9, in 11
innings.
