Pickens Schools College
and Career Coach
Of the 249 PHS students
who graduated Pickens High
on Friday night, seven of
those students also graduated
Chattahoochee Technical
College with “work ready”
credentials.
Pickens High School has
become very proactive in ad
dressing the local, state, and
national deficit of skill trade
workers by implementing a
state funded version of Dual
Enrollment called Option B,
which is an optional pathway
to graduate high school.
Students choosing Dual
Enrollment Option B forfeit
certain high school gradua
tion requirements in ex
change for completing the
requirements for technical
certificates, a diploma, or in
some cases, an associate de
gree in approved skill trade
programs at Georgia’s tech
nical colleges.
These graduates attended
day, evening, and summer
classes to complete their pro
grams of choice.
We recognize that not all
high school students are
going to attend a four-year
college and need other op
tions such as this. Job open
ings in high paying skill
trade jobs are plentiful, not
only locally, but across our
state and country. F
or every four people retir
ing from the trades, only one
is stepping up to take their
place. Graduates from the
Option B program, as well as
pathway completers in our
numerous CTAE (Career,
Technical, Agriculture Edu
cation) programs offered at
PHS, will exit high school
with valuable hands-on work
skills that can help combat
this worker shortage.
The interest from the high
school students is growing
each semester and we are
seeing more students enter
ing into this graduation op
tion. In addition to the
growth in Dual Enrollment
Option B, conventional Dual
Enrollment, which allows el
igible high school students to
take approved college
courses while still in high
school, continues to grow in
record numbers.
For Fall 2022 semester,
Pickens High School will
have combined Dual Enroll
ment students (both conven
tional and Option B) that
exceed 100.
Students and parents who
are interested in learning
more about the Dual Enroll
ment programs should attend
one of the several informa
tional sessions held at the be
ginning of each semester.
When informational ses
sion dates and times are es
tablished, they are
announced each morning to
all students, as well as sent to
the student’s school email.
The PHS website has a Dual
Enrollment page, but the live
sessions are encouraged to
ensure the most updated reg
ulations are understood.

Veterans offers JMS student lesson
on real meaning of Memorial Day
Submitted by Frank Leist
Pickens County Veterans Memorial Park
The Veterans Memorial Park hosted the
2nd Annual Jasper Middle School (JMS)
Field Trip on May 24th. The members Jim
Elrod, Doug Jones, Tom McDowell, Scott
Riley, Tom Sylvester, Gary Bledsoe, James
Smith, and Ron Wheeler of the Veterans Me
morial Park wanted the 5th grade students to
understand the true meaning behind Memo
rial Day.
It is not about taking the long holiday
weekend, picnics, a day at the beach, etc.
Memorial Day is a time for remembrance.
Memorial Day is a symbolic representation
of the soldier unable to share a meal with fel
low veterans. Either missing in action or be
cause of death.
Memorial Day is reserved for those who
cannot return a smile or a salute, not to men
tion the families and friends who have been
left behind.
The ceremonies performed at the park
tndy revealed the sacrifices our veterans
gave to our country. Our responsibility to
these students was to inspire them as the next
generation to continue these traditions. They
need to know why and how we honor our
Veterans.
The first ceremony performed (at left)
was how an honor guard pays meticulous at
tention to correctly folding the United States
of America flag 13 times. Each fold has a
meaning, and it was explained to the students
as each fold was accomplished.
The second ceremony was retiring an
American flag (above). The ceremony is
honoring the flag as a symbol of the nation's
unity, its hopes, achievements, glory, and re
solve. The American flag was retired by
burning it appropriately during the ceremony
in a solemn atmosphere.
Every student was given a brochure ex
plaining both ceremonies with an American
Flag.
