Controversial
sermon at Holy
Family
This coming Sunday
marks the 43rd anniversary
of ordination to the priest
hood of the Rev. Byron Tin
dall, priest associate at the
Episcopal Church of the
Holy Family. Byron says that
his sermon this Sunday will
probably be the most contro
versial sermon he has ever
preached. Services are at 8
a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
Byron and his wife, Anne,
moved to north Georgia in
December 2007 in order to
be closer to members of their
family. Following retirement
from the newspaper and
printing industry, Byron con
tinued serving as vicar at
Christ Episcopal Church in
Denmark, S.C., for several
more years. When he retired,
he had served in the Diocese
of South Carolina for 25
years. Before moving to
South Carolina, Byron served
four small mission churches
in the Diocese of Central
New York. He continues to
preach and celebrate the Holy
Eucharist on a regular basis
at Holy Family. He also as
sists in the areas of pastoral
care and outreach.

Father’s Day
Memories
By Rev Max

“Honor your
father and
your mother,
as the Lord
your God has com
manded you, so that you
may live long and that it
may go well with you in
the land the LORD your
God is giving you.
Deuteronomy 5:16 NIV
“Honor your father and
mother” is the fifth Com
mandment in the Old Tes
tament. The teaching from
God established the foun
dation of spiritual, family
and community relation
ships.
To honor someone is
“to give them weight or to
grant them a position of
respect or even authority
in one’s life.” The
first honor is to God as a
believer and the second is
to his Son Jesus. And the
third honor goes to our
“fathers and mothers”
while the fourth is the re
spect for all creation.
June 19th is Father’s
Day and a time to reflect
upon our heavenly and
earthly Father’s influence
upon us. Just because he
is not with me physically
does not mean I cannot
honor him.

“You were taught, with regard to your
former way of life, to put off your old
self, which is being corrupted by its
deceitful desires; to be made new in the
attitude of your minds; and to put on
the new self, created to be like God in
true righteousness and holiness. ”
Ephesians 4:22-24 NIV
W hen one considers the evil that
has been done in the name of
religion, it is understandable
that many give up entirely on organized
religion. The sexual abuse crisis in the
Catholic church has probably done
more to drive the faithful from the pews
than “secular humanism” or other
worldly philosophies. Likewise, when
people see that Islamic extremists are
willing to kill innocent people in the
name of God, this is a repellant to
almost all religion. The history of the
world is awash in the blood of
innocents killed in the name of God,
and when we look closely at the history
of any religion, we almost always see
that right from the start strife, division,
and schism are there. Read the Acts of
the Apostles and see that the early
church was beset by division. There
were disputes over whether the Gentile
converts to Christianity were required
to follow the dietary and other
restrictions of Judaism (cf. Acts 15). We
see also that the Hellenistic Jews
complained that their widows were
being overlooked in the daily
distribution of food (cf. Acts 6:1).
Rumblings of discontent show up early
in every organization and continue
throughout its life. The philosopher
Immanuel Kant remarked that “Out of
the crooked timber of humanity, no
straight thing was ever made.”
Understanding this should make us
humble, and tolerant of the foibles of
others. We are all weak and by nature
sinful, but we can improve, with the
help of God and a sincere desire to be
better persons.
