Minister’s Comer
note or just reflect upon your
lives together. The process
will bring a smile and a tear
but that is a good emotional
experience.
Dear Max D,
You have been gone from
human life for over 16 years
but you will never be forgot
ten in my heart as I reflect
upon our lives as father and
son.
Some would say ya’ll
spoiled me as an only child
by giving me everything I
ever wanted but it did not
ruin me. My head did not get
too big because you exposed
me to a relationship with
Jesus, purposeful work and to
be a friend to anybody who
needed one ... you never met
a stranger.
You taught me how to
drive on your mail route al
though that was against Post
Office regulations ... “al
ways use your mirrors.” A
great memory is the summer
I worked at a 24-hour gas sta
tion and you came some late
nights and stayed with me
and then went to work.
Your service to our coun
try in WWII inspired me and
caused your namesake grand
son Max E to choose the
Army as a career. Nellie Lou
says I inherited stubbornness
from you ... those are posi
tive Caylor virtues it seems to
me. And, the way you looked
after mom after she was di
agnosed with Diabetic
Retinopathy was a true ex
ample of “till death do us
part.”
Thank you for always lov
ing me and standing by me
regardless of flunking out of
college, getting speeding
tickets and being very patient
as I bounced around fighting
God’s call to ministry.
Your smile, your sayings,
your heart and good name
continue to shape my values.
I am glad to be the son of the
original Max Caylor remem
bering what you taught me.
A blessed heavenly and
earthly Father’s Day to all

June 12-June 18
June 12th:
On this day in 1954, Milwaukee Braves
pitcher, Jim Wilson, tossed a no-hitter dur
ing a 2-0 shutout of the Philadelphia
Phillies. In the first no-no ever thrown at
Milwaukee’s County Stadium, Wilson
faced 28 batters, allowed two baserunners
and logged six strikeouts. He even recorded
a third inning double.
June 13th:
On this day in 1997, the Chicago Bulls
were crowned NBA champions for the fifth
time in franchise history following their six-
game victory over John Stockton, Karl Mal
one and the Utah Jazz. Michael Jordan was
named the Most Valuable Player for the
fifth time as well as Chicago defeated the
Jazz, 90-86. Jordan completed the finals
with averages of 32 points, seven rebounds
and five assists. Game six saw him go 15 of
35 from the field for 39 points while grab
bing 11 boards, but it was Steve Kerr who
nailed the tie-breaking and eventual game
winning jumper with five seconds left. Utah
had a chance to send the game to overtime,
but Scottie Pippen stole the in-bounds pass
and tapped the ball to Toni Kukoc, who
threw down the put-it-away dunk.
June 14th:
On this day in 1966, the St. Petersburg
Cardinals met the Miami Marlins in a Class
A Florida State League baseball game. This
was no ordinary contest as it took seven
hours and 29 innings, the longest time and
duration for an uninterrupted game in pro
baseball history. Both teams were tied going
into the 29th before Miami pitcher, Michael
Hebert, led off with a double. Hebert ulti
mately scored on a sac-fly, providing the
winning margin for the Marlins in their 4-3
victory. If you want a fun fact, that St. Pe
tersburg squad was led by an unknown 32-
year-old skipper named Sparky Anderson.
Anderson became the first manager to win
World Series titles in both leagues, with the
National League’s Cincinnati Reds in 1975
and 1976 and American League’s Detroit
Tigers in 1984. He also won two AL Man
ager of the Year awards and was inducted
into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000.
June 15th:
On this day in 1902, the Corsicana Indi
ans pummeled the Texarkana Casket Mak
ers, 51-3, in the most lopsided baseball
game in minor league history. Corsicana
catcher, Jay Clarke, led the way in furious
fashion, going eight for eight with eight
homers. By game’s end, the Indians estab
lished Texas League records for runs, at-
bats (87), hits (53), extra-base hits (27),
home runs (21) and players with five or
more hits in a game (seven). It was a pretty
bad day for CB Dewitt, the Makers’ starting
pitcher who allowed all 51 Corsicana runs.
June 16th:
On this day in 1994, New Jersey Devils
goaltender, Martin Brodeur, became the
first player in franchise history to win the
Calder Trophy as the NHL’s Rookie of the
Year. Brodeur went 27-11-8 with a 2.40
goals against average, 0.915 save percent
age and three shutouts. He also took the
Devils all the way to the Eastern Confer
ence Finals.
June 17th:
On this day in 1884, Providence Grays
pitcher, John Montgomery Ward, posted the
second perfect game in major league his
tory. The first one came five days earlier,
when Worcester’s Lee Richmond had his
own perfecto in a 1-0 victory over the
Cleveland Blues. Ward had a pair of strike
outs as the Grays blanked the Buffalo
Bisons, 5-0.
June 18th:
On this day in 1967, Houston Astros
pitcher, Don Wilson, accomplished a no-hit
ter during a 2-0 shutout of the Atlanta
Braves at the Astrodome. Wilson had a ca
reer-performance, striking out 15 of the 30
batters he faced while surrendering three
baserunners. He also became the first hurler
in major league history to have a no-no in a
domed stadium and/or on an artificial turf
surface.
Continued from Snorts Pase
Gartrell: On Braves winning streak
record in the West (89-73).
Ultimately, the soon to be world cham
pion Cardinals swept the Braves in the Na
tional League Championship Series and
defeated the Milwaukee Brewers in a seven
game World Series.
For an 11-year-old boy who watched al
most every game either in person with my
late father or at home via “The Supersta
tion”, those days were magical. No win
ning streak can match the those thirteen
games in April of 1982 for me. Even the
many division championships since and
two World Series Championships pale
slightly as compared to my first taste of
pulling for a winner in Atlanta sports.
Even in middle age, that nearly no-name
cast is readily remembered with no refer
ence material needed: Bruce Benedict
(catcher), Chris Chambliss (1st base), Glen
Hubbard (2nd base), Bob Horner (3rd
base), Rafael Ramirez (shortstop), Brett
Butler (left field) Murph (center field), and
Claudell Washington (right field).
