New vendor puts the focus on native
plants, education at Farmers Market
Market will be near back gate of Lee Newton Park
to accommodate July 4th holiday events next week
For those interested in herbs, native plants, and living
with nature, Ever Wilder offered selections like passion
flower and provided information on classes they host.

Easy, breezy and a bit
cooler than what it has been
made for a really nice Farm
ers Market day.
Veggies sold out early ex
cept for Zach Henson be
cause he fills his tables full!
So, latecomers still have a
chance to get some delicious,
nutritious, meal additions.
And don’t forget the bakers
and the makers. Breads, pies,
cakes, granola, treats, and
sweets. Crafts, paintings,
decor, and more.
Somewhere between
Dahlonega, Blue Ridge, and
Ellijay is the middle of
nowhere, where a new ven
dor from Ever Wilder Farm
brought native plants like
passion flower and bee balm
to market. Sharing informa
tion about their unique nature
of north Georgia mountain
experiences like U-pick
herbal workshops or a cus
tomized foraging tour. They
offer plant walks, a garden
and farm tour, primitive skills
info and a u-pick apothecary.
For those interested in herbs,
native plants, and living with
nature, Ever Wilder is the
place to go.
Our plant vendors offer
seedlings for veggie gardens,
plants to fill a garden with
color or create a pollinator
haven, and even houseplants
for the indoor gardener. Other
vendors bring the results of
growing their own veggies
and fruits.
Onions, garlic, squash,
beans, tomatoes, greens,
com, potatoes, apples, pears,
and figs, too, in their season.
Every week can bring differ
ent offerings.
Next Wednesday the 29th
and Saturday, July 2nd the
Jasper Farmers Market will
be in Lee Newton Park at the
back gate because of the
Fourth of July activities.
Normally, the market is
located near the Veterans Me
morial at Lee Newton Me
morial Park across from the
Mountain Education School
on Hwy 53.
The market is sponsored
by the Pickens County Mas
ter Gardeners and they will
have their plant tent set up
the second Saturday, July 9th.
You will have the opportunity
to leam more about what
grows here in our area.
The plants offered come
from the MGs own gardens
and they can answer some of
your garden questions like,
“What plants are best for
bees? Should I add mulch?
What are some strategies for
dealing with hot weather?”

Teen dating
By Mary Migliaro
Parent Mentor
Teenage dating can be
confusing for parents. Your
child might not even wait for
the teenage years before they
ask you if they can “go out”
with someone. According to
the American Academy of
Pediatrics, kids start dating at
an average age of 12 and a
half for girls and 13 and a
half for boys.
Both male and female
youth value intimacy, close
ness, and emotional invest
ment in romantic
relationships. These relation
ships can be accompanied by
extreme excitement and hap
piness, but also by disap
pointment and sadness.
Healthy relationships in
adolescence can help shape a
young person’s identity and
prepare teens for more posi
tive relationships during
adulthood. Healthy dating
during the teenage years can
also be an essential way to
develop social skills, learn
about other people, and grow
emotionally.
Teen dating today is not
the same as it was “back in
the day” for most parents.
With the advent of cell
phones, social media, and
other factors, teens today
face many more challenges
such as dating violence and
parents need to be able to
generate discussions about
these topics when their teens
begin to notice the opposite
sex.
Talking to our kids about
dating and sex can be awk
ward. Yet, it’s necessary, says
Amy Lang, sexuality educa
tor and author of Dating
Smarts: What Every Teen
Needs To Know To Date,
Relate, Or Wait. Just as we
teach our children about
proper manners and study
skills, we need to coach them
about sexuality and romantic
relationships, she says. To
help them navigate this ex
hilarating, blissful, painful,
and confounding aspect of
life, you have to get over
those feelings of embarrass
ment and get ready for some
honest conversations.
Whether our kids engage
in long-term relationships
and use the term “boyfriend”
or “girlfriend” during high
school and college, or “hang
out” with a series of different
people, here are five basic
guidelines to start a discus
sion with them. Remember
to revisit these as they ma
ture, and their relationships
evolve.
1. Be conscious of your
social media presence and
think about the kind of
people you will attract with
your photos and com
ments. With the viral aspect
of social media, not all pub
licity is good publicity.
2. Be kind but honest in
any and all communica
tion, even if it’s simply a
text. Don’t ghost someone
after you’ve made a connec
tion. And remember that so
cial media profiles don’t
tndy convey the entire
essence of a human being.
Give people a chance.
3. Be careful with pri
vate details online until
you know someone well
enough and feel safe.
4. Be mindful that con
sensual behavior is a must
at every step in a relation
ship.
5. Be able to walk away
from a relationship if you
are not feeling valued and
appreciated, and never
allow verbal abuse or
physical violence from a
partner. Some deal break
ers never change.
Don’t feel like if you set
rides about dating, you’re
infringing on your teen’s in
dependence. Research has
shown many times that
teens thrive when loving
parents set and enforce clear
limits.
If someone does break
your teen’s heart, and it’s
likely to happen, sooner or
later, don’t minimize their
pain. Tell them you know
how much they hurt and
gently tell them that time
will help. If you experi
enced teen heartbreak, you
could empathize by sharing
your story.
And while those of us
who managed to navigate
through blind dates and se
tups with total strangers can
acknowledge there might be
a few benefits to how it’s
done today, many more of
us find it a little sad our kids
are missing out on the
slower, more old-fashioned
version of dating.
Love letters and lengthy
landline phone conversa
tions may forever be a thing
of the past, but instilling in
our kids an appreciation for
decency, kindness and mu
tual respect will never go
out of style.

Jellofish is the story of
four World War II veterans
who meet to play poker
monthly since 1946. They
commemorate important
events on history chips and as
the play unfolds, a lifetime of

Five percent of each win
