/ CJ Saturday’s ballgame was a thriller; a
* 14 inning battle
One of the best ball games ever
witnessed in Jasper was played last Sat
urday here between Jasper and Tate.
The fast Tate boys led 3 to 1
until the sixth inning when Jasper tied
the score. Bill Chastain was on the mound pitching for the
home boys when the game started, and pitched a great game
for all of the 14 innings, striking out three men in the 13 th
inning. It was a goose-pimple raiser from start to finish, and
will be long remembered by all the fans that witnessed the
battle.

Celebration of an outstanding woman,
Janis McGhee Stancil
(March 24,1931 - July 24, 2022)
Janis was born into humble beginnings in Whitestone, GA, the
oldest of seven children. At a very young age, she learned the
meaning of hard work in helping care for her special needs little
sister, Anna Jane. The value of hard work is a theme throughout
her life. She met her husband, Freddy Stancil, while working at her
aunt’s cafe.
Together, they raised four daughters and managed a four acre homeplace at 508 South
Main Street. The place was big with a lot of maintenance and they managed it all
themselves. They planted and harvested a very large garden and filled the freezer and
basement with frozen and canned vegetables to last them until the following summer.
The food was really good!
Janis made a lot of the girl’s clothes. She had to move the sewing machine off the
kitchen table to serve meals and then would return it to get back to work sewing after
dinner. Janis loved flowers and worked hard in the flower gardens around the home as
well. After they built the swimming pool, Janis entertained the church ladies and
neighbors with salad parties poolside while the kids enjoyed swimming. Janis and
Freddy loved sharing everything they had with those they loved. Family, friends, and
neighbors were always invited to come enjoy the pool.
Janis loved the First Baptist Church and made sure her girls were very involved. She
taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Training Union and traveled with the
first youth mission trips. Later in life, she loved her adult Sunday School class,
supporting the food pantry, singing in the Joy Choir and traveling on senior group
trips around the area.
Janis had a strong commitment to education and ensured her four daughters earned
their college degrees. She began her career when her youngest daughter started
kindergarten. Betty Anne Walker recruited Janis to be a teacher at Head Start and she
enjoyed taking college classes towards a college degree. She was later asked to revive
the Preschool program at the First Baptist Church, an opportunity she cherished.
When Pickens County Library asked her to be Librarian, she accepted and continued
to serve the education of children through story time. She loved young children and
some of her fondest memories were of these times with them.
Most of all, she cherished her girls, Lisa, Nina, Fredna, Tina and granddaughter Tiffany
and great-granddaughter Fay. Janis had a very full life committed to God, family, hard
work, education and her community. She will be greatly missed by all those she
touched.
