XC report continued
Who are your returning seniors? What
are you counting on them to provide for
your program?
Our girls' team is young, so we don't
have a single senior on the roster this sea
son. For the boys, Noah Jones and Will
Hall will lead the way (figuratively and lit
erally). Both of them are college
prospects, and they have had a great sum
mer of training. As seniors should, they
set the tone for the rest of the team with
their work ethic and their leadership. I'm
excited to see what kind of season they're
going to have and the influence they'll
have on the younger guys.”
What strides have been made by the
team or individuals in the off season
that you believe will show up this sea
son?
Our kids had an excellent summer of
training. In addition to the hundreds of
miles they've run since early June, we in
corporated some fairly intense cross train
ing in the pool on their two hardest
running workout days every week along
with some stationary bike workouts. The
kids really seemed to enjoy the variety, and
I'm convinced it has helped improve their
overall fitness. I guess we'll find out at our
first race in a couple of weeks.
Where do you want to see your program
improve this season or build on from
last season?
We're always talking about getting bet
ter, and although we've been pretty good
for the last several years, our sights are set
on state championships. These kids (and
this is typical for most distance runners)
are so intrinsically motivated and set such
high expectations for themselves that they
honestly don't require a lot of "hooting and
hollering" on my part to get them ready to
compete or to inspire them to achieve great
things.
Are there any impact players coming in
or moving up that you would like to
highlight?
We have an incoming freshman, Kaela
Kearney, who will make an immediate
positive impact on our girls' team. She ran
in two high school JV races at the end of
last season as an 8th grader and won both
of them with ease. She's also had a solid
summer of training, which included a
week at Brevard (NC) running camp
where she ran some of the toughest moun
tain trails in the Southeast. She's talented
and tough, and she wants to contribute to
her team's success.
For the boys, incoming freshman, Luan
Michau, is going to be a real talent. He's
young, so he doesn't have the strength yet
to be able to compete with juniors and sen
iors, but he's a natural talent and a pure
runner with a beautiful, smooth stride. His
training over the summer was sporadic be
cause of a broken arm he suffered playing
soccer while visiting family in South
Africa, so it'll take him some time to get in
shape, but he'll be one to watch over the
next few years, and we're hoping he'll be a
contributor by the end of the season.
Are there any new members to your
coaching staff you would like to intro
duce to the community?
We're really excited to have Kristin
Deering join our coaching staff as an as
sistant. Coach Deering agreed to come on
board at the end of May, and she has been
a tremendous help to our program this
summer. She has a track background, and
her oldest daughter, Brylee, who set the
PHS school track record in the 400m and
800m this past season as a freshman, runs
for us. Coach Deering is one of those who
is constantly working behind the scenes
and wants absolutely no recognition for
any of it. She's all about the kids, and we
love having her.
Are there any special events you want to
go ahead and get the word out on for
this season?
We host two huge cross country meets
every season at Roper Park. This year, the
Pickens Preview was held August 20th,
and our Pickens & Grinnin' Invitational
will be held on Friday night, October 14th,
and Saturday, October 15th. There are 42
teams already signed up to compete in our
October meet. Our booster club does an
outstanding job organizing and planning
these meets, and I would encourage any
one in the community who loves high
school sports to come out and watch some
outstanding runners. You won't be disap
pointed.
