Bountiful Joy at Fellowship Presbyterian
Joy to Pickens County - and to the
world. We at Fellowship Presbyterian
Church sharing tidings of great joy in
a number of ways throughout our
community during this 2022 Advent
Season. You are invited to share with
us in celebrating the birth of our Sav
ior, Christ the Lord.
Advent is the time of rich antici
pation of the arrival of Christ our
Savior. Our Advent celebration got
off to a roaring start this past Sunday
at our annual Hanging of the Greens
Service. The heavy lifting of hanging
our largest lighted wreaths over the
doorways into our church had already
been done the day before. Children
and their parents shared in decorating
our sanctuary with the life-giving
greenery and color of garlands, rib
bons, wreaths and poinsettias.
Throughout the service we joined in
singing hymns and carols and shared
readings of the Christmas story and
the significance of the decorations.
The highlight came when everyone
joined in covering our 12 foot tree
with beautiful handmade white
Chrismon decorations highlighted in
gold. At the end our sanctuary
beamed with color, greenery and for yourself. On December 11 at 3,
glowing faces. Then we all gathered our Music Ministry will present Cel-
in Fellowship Hall and shared friend- ebration of Christmas in Music direct
ships over a scrumptious chili supper, by Regina Martin. More on this next
Come see our beautiful sanctuary week.
This Christmas we are joining
with the Salvation Army to help those
most in need. Members of FPC are
volunteering their time December 8,
9 and 10 to ring the bell next to the
famous Red Kettle. We will be col
lecting in front of the IGA Market in
the Foothills Shopping Center in
Marble Hill. Please give what you
can into the Red Kettle wherever you
hear the bell ringing.
When making plans for your fam
ily’s Christmas Eve traditions, we
must all make a priority of taking
time to appreciate the true meaning
of the joy of this day. Include bring
ing your entire family to the Christ
mas Eve Nativity Service at FPC on
December 24 at 6 p.m. Everyone will
have the choice to enjoy playing the
parts of characters who witnessed
that night in Bethlehem in this brief
reenactment of Christ’s birth
Come this Sunday at 10 a.m. to share
in the joy at Fellowship Presbyterian
Church, 389 Bent Tree Drive in

Positive effects of
being grateful
By Ben
Mock,
Chaplain

Mountain
side Hospital
In his last recorded
epistle, Paul warned Tim
othy, his son in the min
istry, “that in the last days
perilous times shall
come.” Among the signs
of moral and spiritual
decay that would prevail
prior to the coming of
Christ, the Apostle noted
that “men shall be un
thankful.” (2 Timothy 3.1-
2) In His own description
of conditions leading up
to His return, Jesus pre
dicted that “men’s hearts
would fail them” (Luke
21.26), and “pestilences”
would be widespread
(Matthew 24.7). Is there a
correlation between in
gratitude and poor health?
Absolutely, if the results
of recent research regard
ing the health benefits of
thankfulness are any indi
cation.
According to the Mayo
Clinic, “Studies have
shown that feeling thank
ful can improve sleep,
mood, and immunity.
Gratitude can also de
crease depression, anxi
ety, difficulties with
chronic pain, and risk of
disease.” People who take

We Cannot
Eat Gold
Ti:
JL et
“For the love of money is a root
of all kinds of evil. Some people,
eager for money, have wandered
prom thefaith and pierced
themselves with many griefs. ”
—1 Timothy 6:10 NIV
.ose espousing a simpler way of life
have often reminded us that we cant
eat money. There are many stories
about native Americans being perplexed by
the obsession of the newly arrived Europeans
with gold. JVlore recendy this meme has
found favor with environmentalists, who
worry that corporate interests will destroy
the earths ability to provide healthy food.
This idea is even put forward by modern-day
survivalists who had previously advised
people to invest in gold, fearing that
traditional currency would be useless when
society eventually fails. Some of them now
argue that gold will be as useless as currency
in the coming apocalypse, precisely because
you cant eat gold. It is better to have a
reliable store of food, or the means of
producing it, they say, than gold. But why are
we so obsessed with money in the first place?
For anyone who has ever struggled to come
up with enough money to buy food, or to
pay the rent, the answer is obvious: money
provides us with a modicum of security. We
may not be able to eat money, but money can
usually buy us food. Having a surplus of
money gives us the peace of mind to not
worry about the unexpected expenses of life.
While there is nothing wrong with saving
for a rainy day, the question is whether we
have the right attitude about money.
