The teams of Pickens High
School will play those of Tate High in
the local gym on Friday night, Decem
ber 19. The Tate teams come to Jasper
with a fine record. Their girls have lost
two and the boys none. This is the first Tate girls team in a
long time that has had a chance of beating the Jasper girls,
who lost one game and later won in a return game. Tate girls
say they are going to win. Jasper girls say they are.
According to the dope, seasons play and experience Tate

Cheryl Jones
Heaven got a little
brighter Saturday, Decem
ber 10, 2022, when Cheryl
Mitchell Jones danced into
her heavenly home.
The eldest of three
daughters, bom on May 8,
1949, to the late Elzene
Marie (Godfrey) Mitchell
and Joseph Seth (JS)
Mitchell Jr., Cheryl grew up
in Atlanta before receiving her bachelor’s degrees in biology
and chemistry from the University of North Georgia and
master’s in finance from the University of Texas.
While living and working in New Orleans, Cheryl met
and soon married the love of her life, Douglas Jones. Doug
and Cheryl moved to Houston, Texas where Cheryl contin
ued her career as a manager at Frito Lay. Doug teased that
she didn’t even like to eat Frito Lay products. Doug’s con
struction career required them to move throughout the US
before settling in Alpharetta, Georgia, with their three chil
dren, Bryan, Stephanie, and Jenni.
Professionally, Cheryl began her career as one of the first
female supervisors at Hunt-Wesson Foods and retired as the
Vice President of EIS Finance at SunTrust. Cheryl was a
trailblazer with an inspiring career but her most cherished
accomplishments in life were that of daughter, wife, sister,
mother, grandmother, and friend. She was a resilient and de
voted mother, putting her family above all else.
In 2016, Doug and Cheryl retired to Big Canoe and forged
deep bonds with many in the community almost immedi
ately. Cheryl’s days were often filled with her bunco card
group, train dominoes, Bocce Babes, and playing in the
Bocce League with Doug. She loved to spend countless
hours working in her gardens, cheering with excitement each
time something new bloomed. From the tee box of Learning
Ladies Golf to leading the Wildflower Bunch, her presence
was well established and loved.
Her smile, quirky dance moves, and genuine love of life
were contagious. She never met a stranger, welcomed every
one without judgment and with open arms of love. She
would often quote Mother Teresa: ‘‘If you judge people, you
have no time to love them.”
Cheryl is survived by Doug, her loving husband of nearly
45 years; her sisters Marlette Catron (Biff Catron) and Welda
Dmytryk (Jon Dmytryk); son, Bryan Jones and his wife Jes
sica; daughter, Stephanie Jones; daughter, Jenni Stroble (Jon
Stroble); the grandchildren she adored, Parker, Peyton,
Ryleigh, Eleanor, and Mackenzie; and their sweet yellow lab,
Abby.
In true Cheryl fashion, a Celebration of Life is scheduled
for January at the Big Canoe Chapel with a reception follow
ing at the Big Canoe Beach Club. Time and date for Cheryl’s
Celebration of Life will be announced later.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations in
Cheryl’s memory to be donated to the Parkinson’s Founda
tion at www.parkinson.org or mailed to Parkinson's Founda
tion 200 SE 1st Street Suite 800 Miami, FL 33131.
Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral
Home and Crematory.
