Minister’s Comer
become king.
This text prophesies a
unique royal child. He will sit
on David’s throne and bring
salvation. He will revolution
ize government and wisely
guide our lives. He will
heighten awareness of the
sovereign, omniscient, om
nipresent God. The child will
connect us to a Father who
will never leave us, not for
sake us. He will be the chief
arbiter of peace and His reign
will be eternal.
This is a huge responsibil
ity for a child, but He is no
ordinary child. He came to
our rescue. Because of who
He is, He is able to fulfill all
of these responsibilities.
Does it seem hard to trust
a child? In this case, it is
wise. The child is our Lord
Jesus Christ. Surrender to
Him and receive the gift He
provided. Jesus was a child.
God in flesh. He grew in wis
dom and stature, died and
rose. He ascended back to the
right hand of God’s throne.
There He carries out these re
sponsibilities on our behalf.
Christmas Services at
Holy Family Episcopal
Nativity Scene at Holy Family
On December 24 Christ
mas Eve services will be of
fered at the Episcopal Church
of the Holy Family at 4 and
6:30. The Folk Choir will
sing at the 4 service and the
Chancel Choir will sing at the
6:30 service, which will
begin with the singing of
Christmas songs and an
thems.
The Rev. George Yandell
will preach on the question,
“Have you ever considered
that Jesus was bom under the
starlit sky, no roof, nothing
but starlight to be one of the
first blurry sights his eyes
caught? It gives me a chill,
then an understanding. As a
gospel passage quotes the
grownup Jesus, ‘The Son of
Man has no place to lay his
head’ but under the heavens.
Jesus was born among the
animals in an open courtyard
and laid in one of the ani
mals’ feeding troughs. If we
focus on Jesus, we come to
realize we gather at Christ
mas to celebrate and make
known what is unique to
Christianity alone: that God
has become one of us. In this
neonate, suckling at his
mother’s breast, is the en-
fleshment of God.”
On December 25 a Christ
mas morning service will be
offered at 9 as a simple quiet
Eucharist in the side chapel.
The Rev. George Yandell will
preach on C. S. Lewis who
always liked to say that God
has a way of making straight
paths into crooked lines.
Imagine ‘crisis’ was very
much on the minds of Joseph
and Mary as they fulfilled
their state obligations of cen
sus and taxes on the road to
Bethlehem. And yet, it is
Mary’s crisis, it is her faith
fulness, that opens another
doorway to how we live our
lives and the history that we
build and share on our jour
ney.

Gartrell
2022 which is his most pro
ductive MLB season, his hot
steak only lasted for three
months (batted .304 in May,
.330 in June and .308 in July)
of the six month schedule.
He was a liability in April
(.216) and fading by late
Summer (.254 in August and
.234 in September). By the
post-season, he slumped to a
.125 average with more
strikeouts than times on base.
Is the Braves’ roster
weaker without Swanson?
It remains to be seen.
Reasonable expectations
tell us that between healthy
Albies and Acuna Jr and
more production from left
field the loss of Swanson’s
production can be mitigated.
Eddie Rosario missed a sig
nificant portion of 2022 due
to eye surgery and Marcell
Ozuna slumped most of the
year possibly because he
hardly played in 2021. If ei
ther or both of them bounce
back into form in 2023 or the
franchise acquires another
every day kind of left fielder,
the offense should be fine.
December 18 - December 24
December 18th:
On this day in 1932, the Chicago Bears
hosted the Portsmouth Spartans in a league
tie-breaking playoff game that determined the
NFL champion. This contest was initially
supposed to be played at Wrigley Field, but
due to heavy snowfall and freezing tempera
tures, it was relocated within the confines of
Chicago Stadium. Both teams played on a
makeshift mulch field that was spread atop
the facility’s concrete surface. Three score
less quarters went by before Bronko
Nagurski found Red Grange for a two-yard
scoring pass. Chicago’s defense added a
safety and claimed the title with a 9-0 victory.
This was the last postseason game to be
played before the divisional realignments and
outright championship game were put into
place the following year.
December 19th:
On this day in 1974, Washington Capitals
left winger, Dave Kryskow, scored the first
shorthanded goal in franchise history. Wash
ington defenseman, Bill Mikkelson, was sent
to the box for tripping at the 13:57 mark of
the opening period. The Caps, already trailing
the Los Angeles Kings by a goal, had to kill
the penalty, but did much more than that.
Kryskow tied the score by finding the net 48
seconds later, but the Kings ended up win
ning, 4-1.
December 20th:
On this day in 1991, the National Hockey
League awarded franchises to Tampa Bay
and Ottawa, Canada’s Capital. These clubs
became known as the Tampa Bay Lightning
and Ottawa Senators, both of whom were in
augurated prior to the 1992-93 campaign.
December 21st:
On this day in 1941, Chicago Bears half
back, Ray McLean, made the last NFL drop-
kick for an extra point until Doug Flutie per
formed the trick with the New England Patri
ots in 2005. McLean did this during
Chicago’s 37-9 rout of the New York Giants
in the NFL championship game. His kick
took place after the Bears scored their final
touchdown, which came on Ken Ka-
vanaugh’s 42-yard fumble return. Chicago
wrapped up the title by breaking a third quar
ter tie and scoring 28 unanswered points.
December 22nd:
On this day in 1924, the number 13 proved
lucky as Toronto St. Patricks right winger,
Babe Dye, became the 13th player in NHL
history to score five times in a game. Dye
was responsible for the game’s first and last
goals. He also scored three unanswered times
near the end of the first period and during the
first half of the second. Toronto logged seven
consecutive goals before routing the Boston
Bruins, 10-1.
December 23rd:
On this day in 1987, Buffalo Sabres goal-
tender, Tom Barrasso, became the youngest
netminder in NHL history to record 100 vic
tories. At 22 years and nine months old, Bar
rasso approached the century mark by
making 26 saves during a 5-2 win over the
Detroit Red Wings.
December 24th:
On this day in 1949, the Montreal Cana-
diens and New York Rangers played to the
NHL’s only scoreless tie ever to take place on
Christmas Eve, or Christmas Day. Don’t
bother looking for any Christmas Day score
less games, it’s not happening. Anyway,
Montreal’s Bill Durnan and New York’s
Chuck Rayner were both splendid in their
creases and each earned a shutout. Unfortu
nately, each was credited with a tie, much to
their dismay.
