FBI, local sheriff’s office
on lookout for bigamist
Both as the woman she is
today and the man she was
before, Erica Sandra Kay
faces criminal chagres in
cluding bigamy. The Federal
Bureau of Investigation has
launched an investigation
into the whereabouts of a
woman who is wanted for
charges in Pickens County
after she allegedly left her
husband of that time, one of many, and absconded with
money and valuables. Kay, 47, is wanted by the FBI for de
frauding men she has married, including a Pickens County
man. Kay began her life in 1950 as Eddie James Mundell
before undergoing a sex change operation to become a
woman. In 1968, while still a man, Mundell deserted the
armed forces at Camp Lejeune, B.C., according to police
records. Since becoming a woman, Mundell has been ac
cused of defrauding men she has married, not only in Pick
ens County but also in Gilmer and St. Petersburg, Fla.

v—' Armed Robbery
Byers and Roper Store, located at the
intersection on Highway 53 East and
Yellow Creek Road, was robbed at gun
point last Thursday night. Two men dis
guised by light colored fabric over their
faces and armed with pistols entered the store just after six
o’clock. They took about $600 from Mr. Aughton Roper and
about $50 from the cash register. Two customers who were
in the store were also robbed. Gene Blackwell was robbed
of $10 and Roy Hyde of $20. The two robbers entered the
store with pistols drawn and told the occupants that if they
would hand over their money there would be no trouble.
Mrs. Byers, who was at the cash register, said they made no
threats other than the pistols and did not use abusive lan
guage. After taking the money, the victims were put into an
adjoining room and told to remain there for fifteen minutes.
In less time than that they left the room and saw the auto
head toward Dawsonville. Mrs. Byers said this was the first
time the store has been robbed but it has been burglarized.
Sheriff Cantrell stated that he had some good leads and ex
pected to make an arrest in the case soon. This is the first
armed robbery to occur in Pickens County since Sheriff
Cantrell has been in office.
