Nettes win holiday tournament
Team defeats tourney opponents by double digits
The varsity Dragonettes
put a bow on 2022 with a
holiday tournament champi
onship over the break. The
Nettes traveled to Pope High
School for an 8 team tourna
ment and took each game by
double digits.
The tournament started
with a 62-17 dismantling of
Kennesaw Mountain. That
led to a match-up with 6-2
Cambridge. The Nettes led
24-22 at the half, but used a
23-9 third quarter to break
the game open leading to a
62-41 victory. Pickens would
finish the tournament facing
the host school, Pope, which
came into the match up with
a 10-2 record. The game was
tight early and again, the
Nettes got some separation in
the second half before an
eventual 58-39 championship The champion Nettes with the holiday tournament trophy. Below, Bella Hopkins (left) was selected to the all-tourna-
wm - ment team at Pope while Caroline Mullins continued her fine play this season to be selected the tournament MVP.

The Nettes will finish
2022 and the first half of the
season with a 12-1 record.
The new year will start with
a bang as former region rival
NW Whitfield will come to
town on January 4th before
the Nettes travel to Sonorav-
ille to face a 9-1 Lady
Phoenix team.

Season (Part 2)

5) Joey Logano wins
Championship #2 - had to
put the champion on the list.
Even if one can argue the
championship being settled
in a one race duel is a bad
way to crown a champion,
winning the championship is
still a very big deal. Being in
1st place at the end of a 36-
race season still deserves a
lot of credit and Logano was
able to pull it off. His cham
pionship this season was his
2nd championship, which
nowadays with this current
NASCAR playoff format, it’s
very hard to be a multi-time
champion, so Logano de
serves credit for not only
being a multi-time champion,
but being a multi-time cham
pion under the current
NASCAR playoff format.
4) Austin Cindric wins
Daytona 500 - winning the
biggest race in NASCAR in
always an amazing feat to ac
complish as well. What
makes Cindric winning the
500 more special is that he
was a Cup series rookie this
year and he won the Daytona
500. The only other time a
rookie won the Daytona 500
was Trevor Bayne in 2011, so
winning the 500 as a rookie
is also special of itself since
it has almost never happened
before.
3) Incredible COTA finish
between Chastain, Bowman,
and Allmendinger - this fin
ish was incredible for a num
ber of reasons. One, three
drivers were battling for the
win. Two, it involved two
bumps and runs for the lead,
ending with Allmendinger
getting spun out due to get
ting the bumper and it being
a 3-car battle for the win.
Three, all of these drivers

30).

Laughs
As 2022 concludes, I
want to share a few of
the more humorous
lines from the sports
world over the past
year.
Dwight Perry of the
Seattle Times: “Major
League Baseball will
allow its teams to sell
sponsorships to
cannabis companies
that market CBD prod
ucts, the Sports Busi
ness Journal reported.
‘Spahn and Sain and
Pray for Rain’ is about
to be supplanted by
‘Cheech and Chong and
Pass the Bong.’”
Phil Mushnick of the
New York Post, after a
fan was robbed —
twice — while leaving
Yankee Stadium: “You
mean he had money
left?”
Steph Curry, hosting
the ESPYs, on Tom
Brady unretiring from
the NFL at age 44:
“He’s the only guy I
know who’d rather get
hit by Aaron Donald
than hang out with a su
permodel.”
fark.com headline:
“Mike Trout diagnosed
with rare spinal condi
tion that’s been aggra
vated by carrying the
Angels for the last 10
years or so.”
Thomas Carrieri of
LostlnBostonSports.co
m, via Twitter, on kids
eating free whenever
the Red Sox win: “The
good news about this
season is the Red Sox
are single-handedly
ending childhood obe
sity.”
Ex-LSU football
coach Ed Orgeron, to
the Little Rock (Ark.)
Touchdown Club, when
told at his firing he’d re
ceive a $17.1 million
buyout: “What time do
you want me to leave
and what door do you
want me out of,
brother?”
Phil Mushnick again,
on a rumoured transac
tion by the New York
Giants: “The Giants
reacquire Odell Beck
ham Jr.? That would be
like paying to have your
kidney stones put
back.”
Steve Burgess of
Vancouver, on the pain
of love for the Canucks:
“They get in your
blood, and then it's
blood poisoning.”
Reds first baseman
Joey Votto, via Twitter,
undergoing season-end
ing shoulder surgery
after hitting just .205: “I
didn’t know I was hurt.
Thought I just stunk.”
