A structure fire last
Tuesday, Dec. 20 rendered
a home in Jasper a total
loss.
Fire crews were dis
patched at approximately
9:10 p.m. that evening.
Jasper Fire Chief John
Sherrer said the home at 30
S. Georgianna Street was
heavily involved with
smoke and fire when they
arrived at approximately
9:15 p.m.
According to Sherrer,
the fire was under control
by 11:30 p.m., with crews
remaining on scene until
around 2 a.m.
There was no one at the
residence at the time the
fire broke out, but residents
arrived shortly after emer
gency personnel. A neigh
bor contacted 911 about the
blaze.
The cause of fire is
under investigation by the
city and county fire mar
shals.
The residence is located
just outside the city limits
in unincorporated Pickens
County. Jasper Fire was the
primary responder, with
crews from Pickens
County and Bethany-
Salem also responding.
Bring One for the Chipper -
Recycle Your Christmas Tree
It’s that time of year
again! The Christmas fes
tivities are coming to a
close, the decorations are
coming down, and it’s
time for the tree to vacate
your living room. But
rather than taking your
tree to the landfill, recycle
it! Through the Keep
Georgia Beautiful Foun
dation’s (KGBF) ‘Bring
One for the Chipper’ pro
gram, you can help reduce
waste by recycling your
tree.
Keep Pickens Beauti
ful has been participating
in the Bring One for the
Chipper program for
decades, and the number
of trees has grown each
year. Last year, we
chipped 96 trees. Flelp us
break 100 this year!
The Bring One for the
Chipper program was
started by the KGBF
more than 30 years ago,
and in that time, more
than 6 Million trees have
been recycled! They “en
courage communities
across the state to partici
pate in the program by
collecting Christmas trees
and recycling them into
mulch or fuel, transform
ing them into fish or
wildlife habitats, or utiliz
ing other appropriate
reuse methods.”
Bring your tree to the
Park-and-Ride lot near the
Veterans’ Memorial
across from Lee Newton
Park by Saturday, January
7.
Thank you for recy
cling your tree! Every
tree that’s diverted from
the landfill helps!
