tion has canceled the January 3rd, 2022 regular meeting.
The next meeting will be Tuesday February 7th, 2022 at
6:30 pm in the Pickens Room at the County Administra
tive Building, 1266 East Church Street, Jasper, GA30143.

Judicial Circuit’s Veterans Treatment Court
accepting applications for veteran mentors
The Appalachian Judicial
Circuit’s Veterans Treatment
Court is accepting applica
tions for the 2023/24 Vet
eran’s Mentor program. The
court, which was imple
mented in 2013 by Chief Su
perior Court Judge Brenda S.
Weaver, promotes sobriety,
recovery, and stability
through a coordinated re
sponse that includes volun
teer military veterans who
serve as mentors to partici
pants in the Veteran’s Treat
ment Court.
Veteran mentors volunteer
their time and become part of
a support system for veterans
who may suffer from sub
stance abuse, traumatic brain
injury, and mental illness that
results in domestic violence,
divorce, unemployment,
homelessness, and criminal
charges. Veteran mentors in
teract and maintain a rela
tionship with Veteran
Treatment Court participants
throughout their treatment,
increasing their chances for
sobriety and getting their
lives back on track. Atypical
mentor serves 18 to 24
months. This commitment,
other than the 2 day training,
only will take a few hours
weekly.
Prospective mentors must
apply and submit a valid
DD214/215 and if accepted,
will participate in training on
March 18-19th, 2023. This
training will include the his
tory of Veterans Treatment
Courts, responsibilities and
boundaries of veteran men
tors, components of effective
mentoring, and the guide
lines for the execution of du
ties and responsibilities. All
veterans regardless of time in
service or rank are encour
aged to apply.

Golden Deed nominees deadline Friday
Pickens County Retired
Educators Association
(PCREA) will honor a Pick
ens County resident with an
accumulated record of self
less unpaid service to his/her
fellow citizens for the 38th
year. The Golden Deed
Award is presented annually
to the person in our commu
nity who best exemplifies
this common-minded spirit.
To qualify for the award
one must be living and at
least 50 years old; have lived
in Pickens County at least
five years and have made sig
nificant contributions toward
the betterment of Pickens
County without financial
compensation.
Many Pickens citizens de
serve recognition; they must
be nominated by you as an
individual, club member,
church member, friend or
family member. You may
nominate more than one per
son for the honor. PCREA
will accept nominations from
the public through January 6,
2023. The nominations are
judged by a panel of judges
represented by several local
civic organizations. Nomina
tions must be attached to a
written report that includes
complete information about
the nominee’s service to the
community through non
profit and other organizations
including church involve
ment and volunteer activities.
Please consider a person who
goes the extra mile toward
making Pickens County a
better place because of their
unselfish volunteer service in
the community.

Strawberry Pretzel Salad

Ingredients
pretzel crust
2 cups crushed pretzels
14 cup butter melted
3 tablespoons sugar
cream cheese filling
8 ounces cream cheese softened
14 cup sugar
8 ounces Cool Whip defrosted
strawberry topping
6 ounces Strawberry Jell-0
2 cups boiling water
4 cups sliced strawberries
Instructions
• Preheat oven to 375°F.
* Combine crushed pretzels, butter,
and sugar in a bowl and press into the
bottom of a 9x13 pan. Bake 10 min
utes and cool completely.
• In a medium bowl, mix cream
cheese and sugar with a hand mixer
on medium until fluffy. Gently fold in
Cool Whip. Spread mixture evenly
over the cooled crust and refrigerate
at least 1 hour.
• In a large mixing bowl combine Jell-
O and boiling water until jello is dis
solved. Allow mixture to sit at room
temperature until completely cooled.
* Place sliced strawberries over the
cream cheese mixture. Pour cooled
Jell-0 overtop.
• Refrigerate until firmly set,
at least 4-6 hours or overnight.
