PAGE 2B PICKENS COUNTY PROGRESS THURSDAY. JANUARY 12. 2023
Thankfulness, celebration and anticipation at FPC
(L-R) Brandi Dean, Bill Dean, Ronnie Sampson, Allison Johnson.
It’s hard to imagine a bet
ter beginning this early in
2023 for Fellowship Presby
terian Church. Sunday, Janu
ary 9 stands as a milestone
day filled with joy and praise.
Our 10 worship began with
Pastor Blake Hudson pre
senting to our congregation
four new members who were
unanimously and warmly
welcomed by the congrega
tion as Covenant Partners.
Entering into our fold are Bill
and Brandi Dean, Ronnie
Sampson and Allison John
son. These four met with Eld
ers of our Session earlier and
each shared their faith jour
ney. They then affirmed their
belief in and commitment to
Christ as the sole head of our
church and their knowledge
of Him as the only source of
their salvation.
Following our usual Chil
dren’s Moment, two new
Elders were ordained. Bill
Coble and Angela Vaughn
have been chosen by God
through the voice of this con
gregation. Led by Rev. Blake
Hudson, Angela and Bill
completed six weeks of
study, learning what it means
to be an Elder here at FPC
and, by their ordination
vows, pledged to serve our
Lord and this congregation.
To pass on the commitment
of Elders throughout biblical
history, all ordained Elders
present then came forward
and laid hands on Bill and
Angel for their prayer of ded
ication.
Our service continued
with Pastor Blake then deliv
ering the first in a series of
sermons on Christian Virtues:
“Wisdom.” Virtue is defined
as “to function well.” For us
as Christians it’s excellence
of life with the Holy Spirit.
To be virtuous is more than
performing a list of desirable
actions. It changes us. We
can’t gain wisdom needed to
be virtuous just from experi
ence. Seeking it from the
world around us gives us
some instruction, but not all.
Worldly wisdom is folly with
God.

“Come to me, all you who are
weary and burdened, and I will
give you rest. Take my yoke upon
you and learn from me, for I am
gentle and humble in heart, and
you will find rest for your souls. ”
Matthew 11:28-29
Restlessness
Why do we go through life with so much
nervous energy, moving constantly,
never satisfied, and endlessly restless?
Some of this may just be the quiet
desperation to keep moving towards our
goals, in the misguided idea that if we
stop moving we will fall backwards or
even sink. And, it’s not just our bodies
that are restless; our minds can’t seem
to slow down either. If you doubt this try
to sit still for an hour or two and do
absolutely nothing, or to clear your mind
of all thought for even a few seconds.
It’s almost impossible for most of us.
Maybe this is somehow built into our
very nature, for this restlessness seems
to surface early in our lives. Children are
almost always restless, and when they
reach the age where they are mobile,
they are off and running from morning
until nightfall. But, this restlessness has
its costs. Besides the endless
expenditure of energy, we miss out on
the pleasures of quiet contemplation. We
should take some time each day to slow
down and enjoy the moment,
communing with God in the solitude of
our quieted mind.
