Church mortgage burned at Holy Family Episcopal
On Thursday, January 5th
in conjunction with the Feast
of the Epiphany and the an
nual Burning of the Greens,
the Episcopal Church of the
Holy Family ceremoniously
burned the mortgage for the
church following a success
ful three-year campaign to
raise more than $622,000. It
was a grand celebration led
by the Episcopal Bishop of
Atlanta, The Right Rev.
Robert Wright, and The Rev.
George Yandell, Rector at
Holy Family.
Following a communion
service celebrating the
Epiphany of our Lord, the
Christmas greens that deco
rated the church were used
for a bonfire to celebrate the
light and warmth of Christ
coming into the world. Once
ablaze, the bonfire also
served as the perfect venue to
ceremoniously dispose of the
mortgage that had been car
ried by the church for 20
years.
Jim Braley, chair of the
church finance ministry,
commented “that a large
number of our parishioners
contributed to this effort, and
coupled with a $250,000
challenge gift, we were able
to become debt free. This
now allows us to use the sav
ings for our many other
church ministries both within
the church and for the sur
rounding local communities
via our many outreach activ
ities. A huge thanks to the
more than 130 people who
contributed to this effort.”

In the civil laws God
dictated to Moses for the
wellbeing of the nation of
Israel, and by proxy to
any people who wish to
be blessed in their com
monwealth, it was clear
that life in the womb was
to be revered and pro
tected. Exodus 21.23-24
states, “If men strive, and
hurt a woman with child,
so that her fruit depart
from her: he shall be
surely punished. And if
any mischief follow, then
thou shalt give life for
life.” Jesus, the One
counted worthy of more
glory than Moses, also
spoke in extremely stem
language regarding the
evil of harming children,
“despising one of the little
ones,” as He put it.

Elegies
and
Eulogies
An elegy is a poem mourning the loss of
someone. It comes from the Greek word
“elegos,” meaning a mournful song, and is
perhaps most associated with the feeling
that someone is gone forever, never to be
seen again. Nothing can describe the depth
of mourning for someone who was loved
deeply and is now no longer here. Perhaps
the best modern example of an elegiac
poem is W. H. Auden's “Stop All the Clocks,”
whose last stanza is as follows:
The stars are not wanted now:
put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.
A eulogy, on the other hand, is a speech
praising the goodness of the deceased, and
comes from the Greek words “eu,” meaning
good, and “logos” meaning word or speech.
We are driven to eulogize elegiacally when
we lose a loved one, feeling a special need
to recall their good traits and painfully
mourning their loss. Keep in mind that there
is always hope that we shall see them
again, on the other side of death. So,
persist in doing good deeds, and soldier on,
despite the pain, in the hope that you shall
deserve heaven.
