A Progress photo in 1998 showed Main Street covered in
snow after a winter storm.
Jan. 1, YEARS
1998:
With winter weather de
scending on Pickens County
this week, there were several
minor wrecks throughout the
county, said Sheriff Billy
Wofford, and cautious driv
ing helped prevent many
more from happening. The
sheriff’s department and 911
emergency answering center
had reports of six wrecks
Monday and early Tuesday.
“Most people were pretty
cautious and I think that con
tributed to the low number of
wrecks,” Wofford said. “We
were pretty lucky.”
Gaylon Matthews, direc
tor of 911, said his staff was
able to handle all the calls
that came in during the cold
weather which caused some
drivers problems on slick
area roads. “We had a lot of
minor wrecks and two entrap-
ments during the snow,”
Matthews said. “One person
was extricated on Yellow
Creek Road by a passerby
and another person was extri
cated by the city of Jasper fire
department after an accident
on Cove Road.”
Matthews said there were
five cars that had problems
staying on Hwy. 53 east near
the Tate House Monday
morning but there were no in
juries reported and, he said,
no damage to four of the cars.
“ft wasn’t a pile-up or any
thing. They just all slipped
and slid at the same time,” he
said.
While drivers were having
their
problems with the icy roads,
children, who were already
out of school for the Christ
mas holidays, were out in
force enjoying the four-inch
snow. True Value Hardware
reported they sold 15 sleds
while they were open Sunday
afternoon to those anticipat
ing the weather forecasters’
advance promise that snow
was on the way.”

Court House Bid Too High,
So Was Rejected : Tuesday
was the day set for the open
ing of sealed bids for the con
struction of the new Pickens
county court house. Only one
bid was submitted that in
cluded everything designed
for the building, and it ex
ceeded the amount of money
available for that purpose,
there it is not acceptable.
We talked to County Com
missioner Grady Jones and he
informed us that as soon as he
could secure necessary infor
mation that the building com
mittee would be asked to
meet and go over the plans
and specifications and see if
necessary changes could be
made so as to come within
the amount of money allotted
for the building.
The plans called for a very
elaborate structure, some of
which can be eliminated. We
hope details can be quickly
ironed out and work start at
an early date.
