Ruth *s Remembrances
Family Reunions
By Ruth Parker
Years ago people tended
to have family reunions
every so often. I remember
going to some and seeing
cousins that I had not seen
for a while. Later, I would
marry into a large family
who would have a get-to
gether every once in a
while. The reunion, usually,
depended upon one person
to get the ball rolling. In
other words, to make deci
sions about when, were,
time, etc., then family mem
bers who could and were
able to, came. Time, day,
place didn’t always corre
spond to everyone’s con
venience, but if you tried to
work around everyone,
you’d never have a reunion
of any kind.
My family always got to
gether at my mama’s house
during Christmas. After we
lost her in 1988,1 was afraid
we would eventually drift
apart, so I said, “Surely we
can get together once a
year.” We eventually settled
on a weekend after the
Christmas holidays and
pretty much continued there
after.
We would have the get
togethers at different homes
over the years, with our
brother and sister-in-law
generously volunteering
their house for the majority.
We would go to my oldest
sister’s house some but they
lived farthest away, so it
was generally more conven
ient for us to have it in
Jasper.
Originally, there were
four of us children, their re
spective spouses and chil
dren. We lost a sister in
2009, then there were three.
We continued having the re
unions until COVID shut us
down for a couple of years.
This year we decided it
was time to try for another
reunion. My daughter got
online with my oldest sis
ter’s daughter to make the
necessary arrangements and
send out announcements.
My daughter offered to have
it at her house but does not
have adequate parking. I
have a smaller house but
better parking, so it was de
cided to have the reunion at
my house. Then began the
task of who was to bring
what.
What was the outcome?
Let you know next week.
