“The Other
War”
By Ben Mock
On Sunday morning, Jan
uary 15, radical Islamic
terrorists with ties to ISIS
detonated a homemade
IED during a church serv
ice in the Democratic Re
public of Congo, killing at
least 17 and injuring
dozens more. The blast
went off as hundreds
gathered for worship and
prayer, celebrating the
baptism of 60 new Chris
tians. An eyewitness of
the attack described the
scene: “Limbs and other
body parts are scattered
everywhere as more dead
bodies are being retrieved
from the rubble. We are
not able to ascertain how
this attack happened or
how many Christians
have been killed, but I can
confirm that this is a grue
some terrorist attack.” A

Getting
Along Despite
Differences
of Opinion
Sometimes the best way to overcome
our differences is to not address them
directly. Having a conversation does not
have to have a point, and certainly
doesn't require that we get the other
side to agree. Even if we end up
disagreeing on some important point or
points, we can usually agree to disagree
in a more agreeable way if everybody
feels like they’ve been heard. If we
came together to discuss theology and
“Be completely humble and gentle;
be patient, bearing with one
another in love. Make every effort
to keep the un i ty of the Spiri t
through the bond of peace.’’
Ephesians 4: 2-3
we have serious differences of opinion
we will probably not have a very civil
conversation. But, if we come together
to just converse with each other about
whatever might come up and can be
civil in our general conversations, we
are more likely to have civil
conversations about the theological
matters which we might disagree about.
Another very important thing to facilitate
civil conversations is to try to meet our
interlocutor on the basis of their
individuality rather than pigeonholing
them into some category. When liberals
categorize their interlocutors as
“evangelical Christians,” for instance,
they are likely to overlook the huge
differences possible among individuals
who consider themselves evangelical
Christians. Forcing people to agree with
you is a kind of violation of their God-
given right to come to their own
conclusions. We don’t need for there to
be complete consensus on most of the
moral, religious or political issues which
we disagree about, but we do need for
us to be able to live together despite
those disagreements.
