city council meeting, Tim
Hensley said his company
plans to convert the old
building into a mall with
space for 32 booths for sell

Hensley said, “It’s going
to be first class - not garage
sale antiques.”
Renovation plans un

historic heritage being pre
served by a decorative
theme using old movie

equipment, even maintain
ing the original sloping
hardwood floors.
The building will be flashier
and look professional, he said.
“When we get through,
rather than looking at the attorney’s building on the block,
people will be looking at us,” he said.
Hensley said in addition to booths, space for print shops
or a photography studio and a cafe will be available. Local
craft or antique dealers will be given first chance at renting
the booths.
“We feel Jasper needs this. It will draw people in and
we’ll be retail,” he said. “I see nothing but positive things in
doing an antique and craft mall.”
[Editor’s Note: the theater eventually became the spot
where the 61 Main restaurant is today.]

yr A P C Last Monday’
The ice storm which struck last
Sunday has been the biggest news
maker in Pickens County and the entire
northern half of Georgia.
Sleet and freezing rain began falling
Sunday afternoon. Howard Dilbeck, official weather record
keeper, reports that there was an accumulation of 1.07 inches
at the weather station in Jasper. The storm was less severe
in this area than in the Atlanta area where over 3 inches of
sleet was reported.
Roads were in very hazardous condition Monday morn
ing, but local units of the State Highway Department Main
tenance Crews immediately began scraping and salting
operations and most state routes were passable by early
Monday afternoon.
County Commissioner Bud Pickett said that the main
problem with county roads has been trees falling across
roads. He estimated that from 60 to 75 have been removed
by county road crews.
Sheriff Harley Cantrell reports that the ice has caused no
serious traffic accidents in the county.
Many homes were without electricity when trees loaded
with ice fell across power lines but all services has been re
stored.
Tom Lindsey reports that service to all Georgia Power
Company customers was restored by Tuesday night although
some lines have been only temporarily repaired. Power in
Jasper was off for only about 30 minutes, except for one sec
tion which was without power for 3 hours.
Mr. Paul Watherby of the Amicalola Electric Membership
Corporation reports that one fourth of the REA customers in
the county were out of power initially, but 98 percent was
restored by Monday night. Crews from North Carolina and
South Georgia aided in the repair operation. Mr. Weatherby
said that he wants to thank all REA patrons for their patience.
