Welcome Hands Quilters at Holy Family
Welcome Hands Quilters
started in 2005 at the Episco
pal Church of the Holy Fam
ily as one of the many
outreach ministries of the
church. The purpose of the
group was to promote quilt
ing for all ages, provide in
struction for those who
wanted to learn new skills
and to provide comfort to
those in need of warmth.
Any person interested in join
ing the group is welcome.
You do not have to be a
member of Holy Family to
take part.
The group has been meet
ing every first and third Sat
urday of the month. The
meetings are usually centered
around tying the quilts that
have been made by the mem
bers of the group. Tying is
one way to bind the different
layers of the quilt together.
The different layers of the
quilt consist of a back, bat
ting and the quilt top. The
tying process creates a way to
keep all of the layers sand
wiched together without hav
ing to stitch the quilt together.
Many people have quilts that
were passed down from gen
eration to generation and we
often hear of the quilt from a
grandmother or aunt. The
comfort those quilts provided
is still available today. The
quilters make a 60 x 60-inch
quilt that is donated to two
foster group homes in the
area. Since 2005, we have
probably donated at least 400
quilts to the Goshen Valley
Boys Ranch and Angel
House. Our last delivery to
Goshen Valley was 50+
quilts.
Like many other groups
during COVID, the quilters
are slow getting back to
gether. But we hope to re
sume our meetings on
Saturday, February 18. We
will be meeting in the Parish
Hall located in the main
church building in Jasper off
of Cove Road at 100 Griffith
Road starting at 10 a.m. We
usually work until 12 and
then adjourn for lunch. The
group is open to new mem
bers and you do not have to
know how to quilt. If you
have a sewing machine and
can sew a straight seam, we
can teach you how to quilt.
You do not need to make
complicated patterns to make
a beautiful quilt for someone
in your family.
We will continue to make
quilts for donation and are
looking for other outlets for
the quilts. If you are inter
ested in learning how to quilt
or have a suggestion for re
cipients, please contact Holy
Family at 770-893-4525 or
holyfamch2@etcmail.com.
The parish administrator will
pass along your information
to one of the quilters and we
will get in touch. Hope that
you will join us in this fun
and rewarding ministry. The
group doesn’t always just
work. We also visit various
quilt shops in the area and
that always includes lunch.

Questions
for a daily

The 40 Day Lenten
Season begins Wednes
day, February 22nd and
goes until Easter. The pe

days the human Jesus
spent in the wildemesms
discerning his call as the
Savior. As Jesus exam
ined his life we too, can
take a good inward exam

ing.
We may use John Wes
ley’s questions, founder of
the Methodist Church, as
a personal guide for our
spiritual exam. There
were 22 questions used by
the group called the “Holy
Club” as they sought to
have a close daily walk
with Jesus. Here are a
few of them to help us in
our 40 day spiritual exam:
Am I consciously or
unconsciously creating
the impression that I am
better than I really am?
In other words, am I a
hypocrite?
Am I honest in all my
acts and words, or do I ex-

Be Yourself
“The greatest thing in the
world is to know how to be
one's own self.’’
-Michel de Montaigne
I t really should not be so difficult
to be oneself, to be who we are
and to be comfortable in our own
skin. Most of the time when people
tell you to “just be yourself’ what
they mean is that you should be
comfortable around them and just
act naturally. We are often self-
conscious in the presence of others,
and when others see this, they often
try to make us feel more comfortable.
But there is a deeper sense in which
it can be hard to “be oneself,” and
that is when we really aren’t sure
who we are or what we want or even
how we think and feel about certain
things. Our lives are an unfinished
project which we find ourselves in
the middle of, and if we are honest
about it, we have a great deal of
freedom about who we are to
become. No one can tell you from the
outside who you should be.
Ultimately, we all must do some
serious soul-searching to figure out
who we will be. And this isn’t just
about your choice of careers or your
relationships, but more importantly,
what kind of person you will be. Will
you be humble or arrogant? Will you
be kind and patient, or prickly and
quick to criticize? This project of
becoming who you are is never-
ending, and in truth it is the greatest
thing in the world.
