O'NEILL OUTDOORS
BY O'NeiLL WILLIAMS
Pick Walleye
for a new
challenge
{O’Neill’s column ap
pears twice monthly in the
Progress, generally the first
and third weeks of the
month.}
In major reservoirs in
Northern Alabama, Ten
nessee, the Carolinas and
Georgia, February gives you
fishermen a new opportunity
for the best tasting freshwater
gamefish I certainly have
ever cooked.
What it is? Walleye. Yes,
I know the Walleye is in most
of the freshwater mountain
lakes in the Appalachian
chain, but he lives so deep
and because he is caught at
night most of the year, he’s
usually not easily on your tar
get list. Here’s your chance.
During the full moon in
February, go up the main
rivers that feed the lake and
use night crawlers or live bait
and you can catch a limit eas
ily. We’re talking about big-
guns, up to 25 inches.
I must admit that I’ve only
done this on the Chestatee as
it feeds Lanier but if it works
there, it’ll work in whatever
lake that has Walleyes.
Here’s the pattern: Go
late in the afternoon up the
river far enough that you’ll
be bouncing on the rocks,
super shallow, work the out
side bends in the current until
dark.
The Walleye are up the
river in the cold water of Feb
ruary to spawn, will bite just
about anything ‘meaty’, put
up a good fight and when
you’re done, filet them out
and have a great fish dinner.
He’s a ‘toothy’ guy so you
might use a light wire leader.
Otherwise, he’s easy. If you
really are punishing, you can
fish on February nights at the
mouths of the rivers entering
the lakes using small
crankbaits on the outside
bends of the submerged river
channel or simply tie on
dropshot rigs.
Artificial deepwater jigs
will work but you’ll catch
more if you hook on a little
meat. Gotta tell you though,
it’s a real challenge at 2 a.m.
in the dark at 25 degrees.
You really must be dedicated
to want to do that.
So, what do you think,
late afternoon for a couple of
hours, or suffer during the
middle of a Winter night? Ei
ther way, first the live well,
then the cooler, then the re
frigerator, then the grill will
have the best tasting freshwa
ter fish in North America,
and you can brag about it like
I just did.

Helping kids love exercise
Childhood obesity is a se
rious problem in the United
States, putting children and
adolescents at risk for poor
health. Extra pounds often
start children on the path to
health problems that were
once considered adult prob
lems such as diabetes, high
blood pressure, and high cho
lesterol. Childhood obesity
can also lead to poor self-es
teem and depression.
Americans as a whole are
getting bigger these days but
instilling a desire to exercise
in children does not have to
be that hard. Children by na
ture love exercise; you just
have to show them how
much fun they can have
doing it.
Saving some time to step
away from the screens and
enjoying activities both to
gether and separately can
build healthy, active habits in
your children that will set
them up for healthier lives
down the road. Here are
some suggestions to imple
ment with your family.
Make it a family thing.
When you’ve finished dinner,
instead of crashing on the
couch in front of the TV, get
the family out for a walk to
gether or ride bicycles. Take
a ball to the park and play.
An hour a day.. .Research
suggests that children need to
be active for a least an hour a
day to stay healthy. Healthy
activities are anything that in
crease the heart rate, get mus
cles working, or use the
whole body, like jumping
rope or swimming.
You don’t need to begin
with an hour a day. Start with
10 or 20 minutes at a time
and build from there. A walk
or run with the dog in the
morning, a ball game after
school, and outdoor chores
before bed for example will
all add up.
Count those steps. Kids
today understand and love
technology. A step counter or
a pedometer, is a good way to
get tech savvy kids into exer
cise. Get one for everyone in
the family and encourage
gentle cooperation to see
who can clock the most steps.
Kids love challenges, scores,
and prizes.
Gear up for surprises.
There is no need to invest in
lots of expensive equipment,
but a few dollars on a skip
rope, skates, a soccer ball,
and perhaps a small trampo
line is a worthwhile invest
ment. You can pick up items
like this inexpensively from
yard sales and thrift stores.
When the kids are complain
ing they're bored, you can in
troduce a new piece of
equipment to get them up and
active again.
Sign up for classes. The
cool thing about taking
classes is the social and con
fidence building aspects from
which your kids will benefit,
on top of the exercise they'll
get. Think about signing your
kids up for a martial arts
class, sports coaching, or
dance class. A quick search
online will turn up several
options.
Don't neglect the games
console. There are many
games geared toward getting
your kids active. They can be
great fun for the whole fam
ily. Systems like Nintendo
Switch and virtual reality
systems like WiiFit Plus, all
have motion sensor games
for fitness, sports, exercise,
and dance.
Use fun, not force. If your
kids are still young, just get
them up and doing. Have fun
yourself and they'll most
likely get carried away with
you. Is it fall? Go chase
leaves, kick them up, and
throw them at each other. Is it
raining? Get your rain boots
on and jump those puddles. A
game of hide and seek, or
chase, is always fun.
No one, especially your
kids, will take you seriously
if you have a do-as-I-say-not-
as-I-do approach. Lead by
example. Find an activity you
enjoy, and get started. Kids
who see their parents exercis
ing and enjoying it are more
likely to adopt the habit
themselves.
Poor fitness among
today's young people is stor
ing up trouble for their future
health, and lowering the
quality of their lives today.
Every parent has a responsi
bility to get kids up and ac
tive. Put these strategies to
work today to teach your kids
to love exercise.
