Jasper Antiques and Things - Wonderful Things!
This was Colonel Sam
Tate’s personal armchair.
There are many other pieces
of furniture on display at
Jasper Antiques and Things
that belonged to the Tate
family and originated from
the pink marble mansion.

Antique stores are com
mon sites across north Geor
gia, almost as common as
Kudzu patches.
However, occasionally,
antique seekers may find a
store that can only be de
scribed as "uncommon.”
Such is the case of Jasper An
tiques and Things located in
downtown Jasper (14 Mark
Whitfield Street).
So what sets this antique
store apart from many oth
ers? Unlike the usual mer
chandise of many antique
stores, old curiosities and
knick-knacks, when you
cross the threshold of Jasper
Antiques and Things, it is
reminiscent of entering a mu
seum. That is because many
of the items on display verge
on the historical.
A sampling of their an
tiques include wringer-wash
ers, telephone switchboards,
dental examination chairs,
and more, all of which are re
minders of a bygone era. But,
what of those items that
"verge on the historical?"
There is a 1950’s era glass
display case from the Rich's
Department Store in Atlanta,
as well as other items of a
purely local historical inter
est, including furniture from
the Pink Marble Tate House
Mansion. Those include ta
bles and other furnishings as
well as Colonel Sam Tate's
personal armchair and desk.
Bill Scurry is the owner of
Jasper Antiques and Things
and he says that their recent
opening was only a "soft
opening," and a bigger grand
opening celebration is sched
uled in the coming weeks.
The story of how Scurry
became involved in the an
tique business is almost as in
teresting as the items in his
store. According to Scurry,
"In the early 1980s, I was
traveling through south Geor
gia looking for a Coke sign to
hang above a Coke machine
I had at my home, and saw a
bam that had a Coke sign on
the side of it. I knocked on
the door and asked the gen
tleman if I could buy his
Coke sign. He said, ‘Yes, but
let me show you what else I
have. ’ He had worked for the
local Coca-Cola company
and would haul stuff home
from the trash pile to use to
make chicken houses and the
coke machines to keep the
eggs cool,” Scurry said. “He
had buildings and buildings
of Coke items. I bought it all
and it took me five years to
get it all."
Those Coca-Cola items
were the genesis of Scurry's
love of antiques, and about
his hunt for antiques, he ad
mits, "It is an addiction...a
good one...but an addiction."
Although he is originally
from Buckhead, Scurry has
close ties to Pickens County.
His family owned a large
piece of land in the western
end of the county and often
visited the property. He has
fond memories of his youth
ful adventures in the woods
and fields of that property
dating back to the early
1970s.
Scurry welcomes all to
visit and view his collection
of antiques, especially the
many items of a local histor
ical interest. Jasper Antiques
and Things is located at 14
Mark Whitfield Street just
behind Clock Tower Gifts &
Boutique and is open seven
days a week from 11 a.m.
until 5 p.m.
At right, Bill Scurry, the
owner of Jasper Antiques
and Things, is pictured
standing next to a wagon
load of antique treasures.
The wagon itself came
from the local area and is
an antique itself.
